Yesilçam refers to the Turkish cinema industry in the same way that Hollywood refers to American cinema, and Pinewood refers to British cinema. Yeşilçam experienced its heyday during the 1950s-1970s, when it saw through 250-350 films annually.

After the 1970s, the spread of television across Turkish homes saw audience numbers drop sharply, and as a result, Yeşilçam suffered.

However, Yeşilçam has seen a revival since 2002, having produced universally recognised and critically acclaimed movies such as Uzak, Babam ve Oğlum and Propaganda.
