Yahoo! Mash is a new social network service launched by Yahoo! sometime early September 2007 to compete with MySpace, Orkut and Facebook in offering mashups of existing web services on a single user interface. The service is currently in beta on an invite only basis.

Mash has the unusual feature of letting a user edit other peoples pages, unless the user turns this feature off.

The social network is widely considered to have been created after talks for merge acquisition with Facebook fell through.[citation needed]

[edit] Modules

Yahoo!Mash pages are made up of "Modules" which can be added by the user or their friends.

One "Module" that can be added to your page (or friends page) can show photos from Yahoo!'s photo sharing site Flickr.

As with other social networks, pages that are not yours can contain a "Common Friends" module to show any mutual friends you may have. You can also use the private messaging system for communication between users.

[edit] New Features

Just as Wikipedia does, Yahoo! have offered with it's MASH community the ability to edit someone else's profile, as well the profile-owner's ability to undo any changes made to the profile. This allows for a more interactive community as people can go to other's profiles and add content, change the layout, or add some funny images to the page.

As well as this, Yahoo! have also offered us something they like to call a MASH Pet. With these MASH Pets, users are able to look after and care for a little pet (by default it is a quite strange looking face, but users can change their mash pet if needed.) by feeding it, petting it, and for the meaner of people out there, by smacking it. You can learn how to change a MASH Pet here: http://www.mishmymash.com/tutorials/mash-pets/change-my-mash-pet/
