Xun Yu (荀彧) (163 - 212), styled Wenruo (文若), served as an advisor to Cao Cao during the Three Kingdoms era of China.

Hailing from Yinghang in Yingchuan, Xun Yu initially served under Yuan Shao. He soon realized, however, that Yuan Shao was not a man capable of accomplishing great things, and he left his service, joining Cao Cao along with his nephew, Xun You.

Xun Yu was the head of all advisors under Cao Cao, and was responsible for much invaluable advice given to Cao Cao during the establishment of Cao Wei. It was he that advised Cao Cao to make a puppet of Emperor Xian, thereby attaining control of the Imperial Court. Cao Cao dubbed him his own personal “Zifang”. Zifang, courtesy name of Zhang Liang, was the man who aided Liu Bang in the founding of the Han Dynasty.

Xun Yu is a wise man who, in the classic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, objected Cao Cao to ascend the throne. Cao Cao furiously imprisoned him and Xun You, and soon both uncle and nephew died. Cao Cao wept for their deaths, claiming that he had lost 2 great advisors.

In 212, Xun Yu fell ill and died aged 49. He was succeeded by his son Xun Han, who died at 30.
