Wheeling Park High School is a high school in Wheeling, West Virginia, United States, and is the only public high school serving Ohio County, West Virginia. Park, as it is sometimes called, is home to roughly 1750 students in grades 9-12.

The school was opened for the 1976-1977 academic year following the consolidation of Wheeling, Triadelphia, Warwood, and West Liberty high schools. By choosing colors of its predecessor high schools, Wheeling Park selected red, white, and blue as its official school colors. Ms. Christine Carder is the current principal at Wheeling Park High School.

[edit] Graduation Requirements

In meeting or exceeding West Virginia state graduation requirements, Wheeling Park requires the following courses to be completed prior to graduation:

  • Language Arts - 4.5 credits
  • Social Studies - 4 credits
  • Mathematics - 3 credits (with 1 credit in Geometry)
  • Science - 3 credits
  • Physical Education / Health - 1 credit in each
  • Visual and Performing Arts - 1 credits
  • Career Major - 4 credits
  • Electives - 3.5 credits

Wheeling Park offers 10 courses specifically designed for Advanced Placement testing. In addition to the courses listed below, students may also choose to test in music theory and foreign languages.

  • U.S. History

  • Chemistry

Along with AP, there are also a few courses that can be taken for college credit through a program known as "College at Park". West Liberty State College, Wheeling Jesuit University, and West Virginia Northern Community College participate in the program.

Wheeling Park's fine academic programs have resulted in its graduates attending many notable universities nationwide and becoming successful in their chosen fields.

The Wheeling Park athletic teams are referred to as "Patriots". Students comprise teams that participate in fifteen individual sports.

  • Boys - basketball, soccer, football, baseball,wrestling, and lacrosse
  • Girls - basketball, soccer, volleyball, softball.and lacrosse
  • All - hockey, cross country, swimming, golf, track and field, and tennis

All athletic teams compete in the OVAC (Ohio Valley Athletic Conference.)

The girls' cross country team won four consecutive OVAC championships for class AAAA between from 2003 to 2006. The girls' soccer team won their 11th consecutive AAAA OVAC title in 2007. The girls' softball team won the OVAC AAAA championship in 2007.

The boys' baseball team won the OVAC AAAA championship in 2006. The boy's tennis team won the State Tournament in Spring 2006.

The boys' cross country team placed 2nd in the OVAC meet in 2006 and placed second at the state meet. In the Fall of 2007 they won the OVAC championship, along with the West Virginia AAA State Title.

Wheeling Park is also home to bands, choral ensembles, and orchestral groups. Additionally, Wheeling Park is widely considered to have one of the best high school music programs in West Virginia and the Upper Ohio Valley. Furthermore, the school's speech team has won 28 consecutive state championships, and its Concert Band has achieved 27 consecutive "superior" ratings at Region 1 Band Festival.
