Established by Rabindranath Thakur or mistakenly called Rabindranath Tagore in 1921, the Santi Niketan Visva Bharati (Gurudev coined the word Visva Bharti, the communion of World with India, and discouraged the usage of the word University in context of Santi Niketan, for University would translate to Vishv-Vidyalaya, a word of lesser horizon in comparison with Visva- Bharti) (Bangla: বিশ্ব-ভারতী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়), located at Santiniketan, West Bengal in India is a Central University.

It has several institutes within itself for undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral studies: Vidya Bhavana (Institute of Humanities), Shiksha Bhavana (Institute of Sciences), Palli-Shiksha Bhavana (Institute of Agricultural Sciences), Binay Bhavana (Institute of Education) and Kala Bhavana (Institute of Fine Arts). In addition, Patha Bhavana, Shiksha Satra (two elementary and secondary schools) and Uttar Shiksha Sadana (a higher secondary school) also confer certificates of the university.
