Vadivelu (Tamil : வடிவேலு) (also Vadivel) is one of the leading comedian in the Tamil movie industry. Post-2000, he has dominated the movie scene in Kollywood, along with comedian Vivek. In his career, Vadivelu has won 2 Filmfare Best Comedian Award for his role in Chandramukhi and Imsai Arasan 23am Pulikesi.
Till 1991,he was working in a small shop where glass frames for photos and paintings were done.At that time, his monthly income was just few hundreds rupees and he was struggling for his day to day expenses.By 1994, he had bought a TATA Sierra (which at that time was considered a luxury).
His first movie was Raasaavin Manasiley in 1991.
Born in the southern city of Madurai, Vadivelu is nicknamed Vaigai puyal (the Vaigai storm, after the river Vaigai, which flows through the city). Starting as a sidekick to the famed Goundamani-Senthil comedy duo, he rose to prominence after his role in Kadhalan. His accent which resembles the Tamil spoken in southern Tamil Nadu landed him roles in Tamil movies with a village background.
One of the reasons he is a supremo is that, unlike other heroes, who are seen as different from the viewers point, he is seen as a brotherhood for the tamilians.People just feel comfortable seeing him on screen, and , then enjoy his comedies. And, the lovely Tamil he dishes out is always a great treat to the real Tamilians.
In most movies, he plays a simpleton with good intentions but lands in trouble because of the circumstances or the eccentricities of the people he comes across. These roles involve heavy use of slapstick and puns, which has led him to being typecast.
His performances in Bharathi Kannamma, Vetri Kodi Kattu and Winner have brought him laurels and accolades from all quarters. He does sing for some songs in his movies. Some of his popular songs are " Vikkalu Vikkalu " and "Frea vudu frea vudu".
He starred in the lead role of the historical comedy spoof "Pulikesin the 23rd". The movie was a massive hit and also widely acclaimed for the clean comedy. The movie features vadivelu in two roles, twins one of whom is a laidback, cowardly king and the other sibling grows into a well read and brave man away from the palace, only to exchange places later
Vadivelu has opted to play the role of Spiderman in the film Vyapari directed by Shakthi Chidambaram.[1]
