[edit] Biography

Born in Barisal, Bengal (now in Bangladesh), Dutt was active primarily in Bengali theatre, but did tour several times with the Shakespearean International Theatre Company. Dutt wrote and directed what he called "Epic Theatre" (a term he borrowed from Bertolt Brecht) to bring about discussion and change in Bangladesh. He was one of the most influential personalities in the Group Theater movement. He acted in many Bengali films, including many films by Satyajit Ray.

Dutt was also an extremely famous comic actor in Hindi cinemas, though he acted only in a handful of Hindi cinemas. He acted in the comedy movies Guddi, Golmaal, Naram Garam and Shaukeen.

He balanced successful parallel careers as an extremely serious theatre playwright and director in Bengal alongside doing hilariously comic roles in Hindi cinema.

Dutt was also a lifelong Marxist and an active supporter of the Communist Party[citation needed]. He staged many street dramas in favour of the Communist Party. He was also jailed for his views.[citation needed] His famous plays include Tiner Toloar (the Tin Sword, partially based on Pygmalion, Manusher Odhikare (Human Rights, based on the Scottsboro Boys case)and Kallol (based on the 1942 Naval Mutiny). Dutt died in Calcutta, West Bengal.
