[edit] Plot
After a break-in at their house by an intruder armed with a knife, couple Michael and Karen Carr (Kurt Russell and Madeleine Stowe) gets help from a friendly cop Officer Pete Davis (Ray Liotta) that answered their call. He helps them install a sophisticated security system, and begins dropping by on short notice and unofficial patrol seemingly become friends with Michael Carr.
However from the outset it is clear he has a lust for Michael's wife Karen and gets to know her behind his back, and spends a lot of time discussing the couple's problems with the wife.
However on patrol one night, Michael in a "ride-a-long" in the police car with Pete Davis, Davis captures the man who originally broke into their home. Although Michael initially swore he would "rip the mans heart out" if he caught him, despite Pete's unlawful invitation to beat the man up severely, taunting him to injure him, Michael condemns such an act and becomes shocked when Davis beats the man up violently in front of him himself.
As their relationship turns from one to friendship to hatred, psycho cop Davis gradually becomes increasingly intrusive in the couple's affairs, surveying the important business transaction Pete is about to sign, and even watching the couple have sex from entering their house, knowing the password, Pyramid. Officer Davis gradually lands Michael in jail by planting a high supply of cocaine in the house, knowing of his past criminal conviction. However in doing so it meant Davis had to kill a fellow police officer in cold blood, a close friend who knew about his obsession with Karen.
Putting his attorney's finances on the line he is able to be let out on bail to arrive at his house as Davis is about to seriously make love to and/or murder his wife.
The film revolves around themes of desire, passion, lust and jealousy.
