Vinod Verma (Vinod Khanna) is an employee of the Indian Railways, who wants to make the perfect and fastest train in India. After years of dedication, the Railway Board approves his prototype of the Super Express. His personal life with his wife (Parveen Babi) and children is ruined because he has paid his full attention to building the model. He hopes to make it up to them after the train makes its inaugural run from Delhi to Bombay in a record 12 hours. Showing him support are his friends, Ashok (Dharmendra) and Rakesh (Vinod Mehra). Another person, whose prototype of his own model of a fast train was not accepted, Randhir (Danny Denzongpa), wants to sabotage the train's inaugural run. He places bombs in the train and sabotages the break. During the run of the train, the bombs bursts and the train does not stop, thus the name - "The Burning Train". What follows are numerous plans to save and counter-save the train, by Ashok, Seema, Vinod and Randhir respectively.
