[edit] Plot
When an orphan, Surya (Rajinikanth) is abandoned by his mother played by Srividya, and left to grow up in a slum, he eventually grows up to be a kind-hearted young man, with a reputation for helping those in trouble and distressed. One day, Surya comes across a woman being molested by another man, and to protect her, he fends off the abuser. However his actions mortallly wound the attacker who is working for the local crime boss, Devraj (Mammootty). When arrested for the man's murder, Surya is rescued by Devraj, who tells him that he owes him for his freedom and the loss of his previous enforcer. Surya agrees to become Devraj's enforcer, and quickly rises to the position of thalapathi (commander),the two men also becoming very close friends. A scrupulously honest administrative officer Arjun (Arvind Swamy) arrives in the district, determined to bring down their gang. Surya takes it upon himself to take out Arjun, not knowing that the man is actually his brother.

- “Rakkama Kaiya Thattu” (7:10) – S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, Swarnalatha,
- “Sundari Kannal” (7:14) – S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, S. Janaki
- “Kaatukuyilu” (5:32) – S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, Yesudas
- “Putham Puthu Poo” (5:00) – Yesudas, S. Janaki
- “Chinna Thayaval” (3:23) – S. Janaki

The background score and soundtrack for the movie were very well received upon release. The songs "Sundari Kannal" and "Yamunai Aatrile" were particularly popular. Ilaiyaraaja's composition "Rakkama Kaiya Thattu" from the score was amongst the songs listed in a BBC World Top Ten music poll.[1] "Putham Puthu Poo" was notably absent from the film due to time constraints and therefore it's instrumental version is used in the film.
