Tempur-Pedic International, Inc. manufactures and distributes mattresses and pillows made from a type of memory foam. Memory foam is made from polyurethane with additional chemicals that add to its viscosity level, thereby increasing its density. It is often referred to as visco-elastic polyurethane foam. The Company is based in Lexington, Kentucky.
Tempur-Pedic advertisements claim that their mattresses and pillows are the only ones recognized by NASA and certified by the Space Foundation, as well as being recommended by over 25,000 medical professionals worldwide.
Tempur-Pedic was founded in 1992 by Robert B. Trussell, after he was introduced to the memory foam concept while in Europe scouting race horses. Memory foam was originally designed by NASA for use in space, but after NASA had abandoned it as too expensive, a Swedish mattress firm picked up the idea and made it into a mattress. Originally a subsidiary of this Swedish company, Tempur-Pedic's office in Lexington is now the world headquarters, overseeing not only all U.S. sales, but also a number of distributors worldwide.
