Two swimmers tied for first place, resulting in the awarding of two gold medals and no silver medal being awarded.

The 80 swimmers first raced in 10 heats. The fastest 16 swimmers overall advanced to the semifinals. The heats were raced on September 20. Each swimmer's time and overall rank in all heats is listed below.

The 16 semifinalists swam in two races on September 21. The fastest 8 men advanced to the final.

The final was raced on September 22. Gary Hall, Jr. won his first gold medal in an individual event, and Pieter van den Hoogenband won his third individual medal of these Games. Alexander Popov failed to defend his gold medals in this event in the previous Games of 1992 and 1996.
