The following 47 films, all from different countries, were submitted for the 72nd Academy Awards in the category Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film (release at the country of origin November 1, 1998 - October 31, 1999, ceremony March 2000). The bolded titles were the five nominated films, which came from France, Nepal, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

Bhutan, Nepal and Tajikistan submitted films for the first time.
