Stouts hill
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Stouts Hill is an 18th Century Gothic revival manor house situated in the Cotswolds just outside the village of Uley. The house is currently a timeshare property.
Although property is known to have been on the site since the 16th century, the manor itself dates only from 1743, the design being by William Halfpenny. Until the 1770s the house was owned by the Rev Lloyd Baker and his wife. For the next 100 years or so it was occupied by Colonel Browne and his family. Stouts Hill was the birthplace of the distinguished Persian scholar Edward Granville Browne.
From 1935 until 1979 it was leased for use as a private boys' school in which some 100 pupils were permanent residents at the house. Notable former pupils of the school include Stephen Fry, who makes a detailed reference to the school in his autobiographical book Moab Is My Washpot, and Captain Mark Phillips, former husband of Anne, the Princess Royal.
