Stargate Universe is the working title of a science fiction television series, part of the Stargate franchise.[1] Produced by MGM, the show was set to enter pre-production in March 2007, entering production in mid 2007 with a projected premiere in early 2008.[2] It is anticipated that Stargate Universe will be filmed and produced in Vancouver, Canada, as with the preceding series.[citation needed]

According to show runner Robert C. Cooper, the "series maintains the spirit of Stargate, but opens up a whole new 'universe'."[3] It is currently being developed as "a completely separate, third entity"—as opposed to Stargate Atlantis, which was created as a spin-off from the first series Stargate SG-1.

It had been rumored[4] then denied[5], that Michael Shanks, who played Daniel Jackson in Stargate SG-1, was offered the lead in the new series.

Robert C. Cooper has revealed that the new series will revolve around the ninth chevron on the Stargate and will take place during the present time, not in the distant future. It would be the first time that this topic is used in a series of the franchise. According to him, "It plays a major factor in the third series". He also stated that the series is expected to be released sometime during 2008. It is not yet in production, with the writing scheduled to start after the conclusion of the direct-to-DVD movies.[2]
