Staple (wool)

Staple is a term referring to fiber that comes in discrete and consistent lengths, measured in millimeters. It is often used in the phrase, "staple length" to describe exactly what lengths the fibers are on average. The staple length of a fiber is one of the major determining factors when spinning yarn. Although traditionally, staple length only referred to animal fibres, it is now used when referring to animal and manufactured fibres as well. Different animal breeds have average staple lengths, and breeders are careful to record and test staple strength for durability.
The opposite term is filament fiber, which is fiber that comes in continuous to near continuous lengths for use. Silk, taken from the cocoon of a silkworm, is called a silk filament.
