Saint Xavier University, also known as SXU, is a coeducational institution of higher learning located in the southwest side of Chicago, Illinois, founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1846 at the request of Bishop William Quarter. It was originally named Saint Francis Xavier Female Academy in the 19th century, which was later renamed Saint Xavier College, and in 1992, officially became a university. The university currently enrolls over 5,000 students and is known for its undergraduate and graduate programs in nursing, business, and education. The school's sports teams compete in the NAIA as the Cougars.

[edit] Campuses

Saint Xavier's main campus is located in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood of Chicago, on the corner of 103rd Street and Central Park Avenue. It is a part of a lesser Catholic school campus, sharing land with Mother McAuley and Brother Rice high schools. It is also located across the street from Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church and grammar school, which lie east of Central Park.

The university's main campus is made up of several buildings, including the Warde Academic Center, which is the oldest building on campus and houses administrative offices, the Shannon Center, McDonough Chapel, a large Catholic chapel, the Graham School of Management Building, Andrew Conference Center, Driehaus Center, Pulaski Center, and five dormitories. Saint Xavier also has a campus located in Tinley Park.
