The Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue is published annually by Sports Illustrated magazine. It features top fashion models wearing designer swimwear in exotic locales. Inclusion in the magazine is considered a measuring stick by which supermodels are measured.[1] In addition, the issue is a media nexus that in 2005 carried $35 million in advertising.[1] New issues come out around the middle of February or later. First published in 1964, it is widely credited with making the bikini, invented in 1946,[2] a legitimate piece of apparel.[3] The issue that got the most letters was the 1978 issue.[4] The best selling issue was the 25th Anniversary Issue with Kathy Ireland on the cover in 1989.[5]
Through the years famous supermodels have been featured on the cover such as Cheryl Tiegs, Christie Brinkley, Paulina Porizkova, Elle Macpherson, Rachel Hunter, Valeria Mazza, Heidi Klum and Tyra Banks. Other famous models who appeared within its pages, but not on its cover, have included Cindy Crawford, Stephanie Seymour, Angie Everhart, and Naomi Campbell. The eight models that were featured on the cover of the 2006 SI Swimsuit Issue were featured in a coffee table book called Sports Illustrated: Exposure (ISBN 978-1-933405-85-8). Photographed by Raphael Mazzucco, and produced by Diane Smith, the unprecedented “reunion shoot” featured 139 pages of never before seen images. In 2006, the special issue of the magazine went portable by expanding its print and online editions to handheld devices.[6] In 2007, the swimsuit issue was first available in China.[7]
The special issue was invented by Sports Illustrated editor, Andre Laguerre, as an attempt to fill a void in the mid 1960s sporting calendar. The story has it that he offered a fashion reporter named Jule Campbell a chance to go on a shoot to fill some space including the cover with a beautiful model. The first issue in 1964 entailed only a cover and a 5 page layout. However, Campbell quickly changed the face of modeling, became a powerful figure in the field, and molded the issue into a media phenomenon.[1]

[edit] Athletes in the magazine
Several well-known female athletes have also appeared within the issue's pages, though not on the cover. Steffi Graf appeared in the 1997 Swimsuit Issue. In the 2003 issue, tennis player Serena Williams and figure skater Ekaterina Gordeeva were featured inside the magazine. Anna Kournikova appeared in an inset on the 2004 cover, and had a photo spread within its pages.
In the 2005 issue, Olympic gold medallists Amanda Beard and Jennie Finch, along with Lauren Jackson and Venus Williams were featured. Tennis phenom Maria Sharapova appeared in an inset on the 2006 cover, and also had a spread inside the issue.
[edit] Beyoncé
In spring 2006, Sports Illustrated chose music as the theme for the 2007 Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue. Senior Editor Diane Smith immediately set her sights on getting ten-time Grammy award winner, Beyoncé Knowles to pose for the magazine.[8] In 2006, Beyoncé launched a swimsuit line under her House of Deréon clothing label. In the end, Beyoncé Knowles became the first singer to appear on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue in 2007.
[edit] Premiums
Over the last few years, various extras have been featured in the Swimsuit Issue. In 1998, athletes and their spouses started to appear in the magazine. One of the featured athletes included Wayne Gretzky with his wife Janet Jones in a swimsuit. In 2000, the magazine was offered with 3-D glasses as some of the photos were published in 3-D. This was also done in 2007. Trading cards were included with the 2005 edition of the magazine.[1] Models featured on the trading cards from the 2005 SI Swimsuit Issue were:
- Shakara Ledard, Frankie Rayder, Yamila Diaz
- Carolyn Murphy, Michelle Lombardo, Anne V
- Fernanda Motta, Bridget Hall, Marisa Miller
[edit] Controversy
To many, the magazine is viewed as an acceptable exhibition of female sexuality tasteful enough that it might not be too out of place on a coffee table.[1] Recent editions even mix the modeling with a tribute to sportsmen. The swimsuit edition is very controversial with moralists who subscribe for sports news content. As a result, annually numerous subscriptions are canceled by irate subscribers when it arrives with its risque content. The 1978 edition, remembered for its fishnet bathing suit made famous by Cheryl Tiegs, resulted in 340 cancellations.[1] Sports Illustrated makes the controversy a form of entertainment with the issue two weeks after the swimsuit edition packed with complainants such as shocked parents and troubled librarians.[1] Recently, as society has become more accustomed to sex linked media and having its youth exposed to a cornucopia of readily available titillation, the number of cancellations has declined.[1] Nonetheless, in order to avoid such controversy, its publisher Time Warner, did not deliver the special edition of the magazine to many subscribers in 2007.[9] Now, Sports Illustrated offers its subscribers the option of skipping the swimsuit edition for a one issue credit to extend their subscription by a week.[9]
