[edit] Introduction
Shizuoka Airport (静岡空港 Shizuoka Kūkō?) is an airport currently under construction in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. It is expected to be completed and operational by March, 2009. To allow for growth in air travel to Shizuoka, Hamamatsu, and Mount Fuji areas, Shizuoka Prefecture has bought 190 hectares (470 acres) of land for the Shizuoka Airport. One reason for building this airport in this particular location is that locals and tourists will not have to rely on the severely congested airports of the Tokyo region, so any flights that bypass that region will help overall air traffic, including direct international flights.
Google maps already show the completed apron and runway of the airport. This location is between Makinohara and Shimada.
It is about 80 km (50 mi) from Mt. Fuji.
