Shankar Mahadevan is an Indian singer and music composer. He is an engineering graduate trained in Carnatic and Hindustani classical music. He's a popular singer in Kollywood industry in South India

Shankar Mahadevan hails from the Tamil Iyer community. In Bollywood he is more popularly known as part of the Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy trio of music directors. He has also served as a celebrity judge in the popular reality television show, Fame Gurukul.

Shankar often collaborates with a group of Swedish musicians, Mynta. He is also a part of the Indo-Jazz fusion music band Silk, comprising Louis Banks, Karl Peters and Sivamani.

He works as a music director with two others, Ehsaan Noorani and Loy Mendosa (see also: Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy), who rose to fame after their music for the movie Dil Chahta Hai became an instant hit. Shankar Mahadevan is a singer, Ehsaan is a guitar specialist, and Loy a keyboard player.

Shankar Mahadevan has provided vocals for several pieces by the Shakti group, which features such maestros as A.R.Rahman, Zakir Hussain and John Mclaughlin.

  • Breathless - Breathless is the album that first gave him fame, including the song, "Breathless," in which he apparently sings through the whole song without pausing to breathe; which is a myth.
  • Nine - Nine is Shankar's most recent album. Each song is a representation of a "mood," including joy, sadness, love, etc.
