Scarlet (from the Persian säqirlāt) is a red color with a hue that is somewhat toward the orange. It is a pure chroma on the color wheel. It is redder than vermilion. Traditionally, scarlet is the color of flame. It may also refer to the color of the blood of a living person. Scarlet is made of red and orange.

The emission spectra for compounds of strontium are considered to be in the scarlet red area of the visible light spectrum. The emission lines occur at 640.8 nm, 650.4 nm, 687.8 nm and 707.0 nm.

The first recorded use of scarlet as a color name in English was in 1250. ^[1]

The novel The Scarlet Letter by 19th century American writer Nathaniel Hawthorne depicts the life of fictional character Hester Prynne, who wears a prominent scarlet letter "A" on her chest to symbolize the sin of adultery.

Military

The majority of British Army soldiers wore scarlet tunics as part of their full dress uniform until 1914 (hence the term "Redcoats"). Some regiments and corps in both Britain and the Commonwealth armies still wear them in full ceremonial dress and/or mess dress.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) wear a scarlet jacket as part of their full ceremonial dress uniform.
