[edit] Introduction
Sathyabama University is a Private University in Tamil Nadu, India, founded in 1987. It was formerly known as Sathyabama Engineering College and is pioneered by Jeppiaar Educational Trust. The college is headed by Jeppiaar, a former politician under the late M.G.Ramachandran. The college is reputed for its student placements, discipline and good facilities. It is a Christian Minority Institution.
The Ministry of Human Resources Development declared the college as a Deemed University under section (3) of the UGC Act, on 16 July 2001.[citation needed]
The University has a record 334 Tie Ups with various companies in Tamil Nadu including DRDO for conducting various forms of research. Many students who passed out from this University are in respectable positions in companies in India & Abroad.[citation needed]
[edit] Accreditation
The college, is Accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, an autonomous body under the University Grants Commission, New Delhi with B++ Grade (80-85%).[citation needed]
[edit] Placement
The number of students placed has increased dramatically over the years.[citation needed]
The college has a very good reputation with respect to its placements.[citation needed] Every year, the college manages to get about 80% of its students placed in various companies, with an average salary package of around 2.75 lacs p.a though the students can sit only in one company and they can not skip the companies, if they do they are not allowed to sit for other companies.Around 1000 students have been placed this academic year (2007).[citation needed] Mainly because of the discipline that's been molded with this university's products, many companies are on their way to its placement program.[citation needed]These students who make it again for these companies to this university's campus placement program.
[edit] Criticism
Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology has been severely criticized by former staff and students for the high handed approach by management in day-to-day activities.[citation needed]The institution is said to enforce a strict code of conduct among students and such rules attract parents who perceived rules such as the male-female segregation to provide "safer" and conducive environment for education (for their children). The following are only some of the rules listed in the college prospectus.
- Girls and boys are not allowed to interact with each other in the campus.
- Separate seating arrangements for girls and boys in the mess, class and bus.
- Dress Code - For boys: Formals. Jeans and T-shirts not allowed. Girls: Full Saree/ 'Chudidhar with Dhupata in V shape'.
- Students and staff are not allowed to commute to the college using their own transport.
The Institution has 60 buses which are made available to the students and the staff members for commuting not only from various points in the city and also from the suburbs. Buses are operated with the policy of a seat for all (claimed by the college but actually always crowded and students have to stand and many times hang on the foot boards of the buses). Students are not permitted to use other transport facilities. Students aren't allowed to leave the campus except in a college bus.
- Mobile phones/ Electronic equipments not allowed in college campus/hostel.
- "Stylish" and "Fashionable" hair cuts, bracelets, hair colour, ear rings, awkward piercings, tattoos, French beards (or any beard for that matter) are not allowed.
- Hostellites have a tough time for they are not allowed to go out of the campus for weeks .In case they escape their respective parents' visit are a must for the re-admission of that particular student. The hostel has television which showed frequently and only news channels such as Sun News.
- No radio/walkman or any electronic device in the hostel (There are NO plug points to charge).
Only window to the outside world is the newspaper.
- Situation has not changed much even after consistent strike by students
Although these many criticisms have been loaded upon this university, the products of this university still continue to be an asset in their respective field. This is way by which this university molds its students with high class discipline to make them fit for their future.
Although it's students suffer a tough college life (only mischievous), after their college life they feel proud to be a sathyabama product. This University has created that magic in every outgoing student's heart. The alumni count itself proves that.
