Salaam-e-Ishq is the story of 6 couples from different parts of the world. Ignorant about each others' existence, they end up being brought together by destiny, fate and love.
Ashutosh (John Abraham) and Tehzeeb (Vidya Balan). Their relationship is made of sweet and saccharine moments as they seamlessly work together to make their two-year-old love marriage a success. Ashutosh is Hindu, while Tehzeeb is Muslim. Their families disapproved of their marriage, resulting in estrangement. Working at a news channel, Ashutosh is a film editor while Tehzeeb is a field reporter. Together they have a small happy world that is, however, soon disrupted with Tehzeeb meeting with a tragic accident. This results in her losing her memory of the past two years, including all her memories of Ashutosh. Tehzeeb decides to leave Ashutosh as she finds it impossible to remember anything. Ashutosh is left in the fragments of his love. Watch the movie to find out what happens to this lovely couple. Noopur is what they called this couple.
Cut to Raju Taxiwala (Govinda) and Stephanie (Shannon Esrechowitz), both of whom are involved in a silent, unspoken relationship of distance. It so happened that Raju met this blonde girl 15 years back at New Delhi International Airport, but lost touch with her; now, year after year, he stands in the queue for passengers and silently hopes that one of them is Stephanie. Surprisingly, one day she arrives, but not for him, but for her boyfriend Rohit Chaddha. Raju helps Stephanie find Rohit, only to learn that Rohit is getting married to a woman of his mother's choice. Along the way, the two of them become close and fall in love.
From Delhi, the story moves to London where we meet a middle aged couple. Vinay Malhotra (Anil Kapoor) and Seema (Juhi Chawla) are introduced. Theirs is a happy, stable family, a family that has all the luxuries of suburban life including two children, one boy and one girl. Vinay has all he needs, yet is restless and quickly growing bored of his average middle-class life. This is when he comes across Anjali (Anjana Sukhani) who is a modern London-based girl with unmatchable confidence and determination. She wants everything, including Vinay. Vinay is not sure of what he wants, and begins an affair with Anjali. He realises that he is making a mistake, and starts to avoid her. She goes to his office one day to invite him to Paris with her. While the two are talking, Seema walks in and finds out about the affair. When the couple reach home, they discuss what has happened, and Vinay says that he wants more out of life. Seema says she only wants him to be content, and decides to leave Vinay. She leaves the country with her children to attend her younger sister Gia's (Ayesha Takia) wedding. Vinay goes for a walk to sort out his problems. He meets Kkamini at a coffee shop, and Kkamini reads him like a book, describing his entire life. Kkamini then asks him for Anjali's full name. When Vinay is unable to answer, he realises that he should go back to his wife and kids. When he reaches home, he finds his family has already left for the airport. He rushes to the airport and catches up to them just in time. He asks for forgiveness, and Seema grants it. Together they catch a flight to attend Gia's wedding.
Gia (Ayesha Takia) and her fiance Shiven (Akshaye Khanna) have problems of their own. They are engaged, but Shiven gets cold feet. After all, his privacy is in danger here. He breaks the engagement and, in the process, Gia's heart! All is well except for one - Shiven wants Gia back as he has realized what she means to him. Gia is heartbroken, and her father arranges her marriage with Rohit, Stephanie's ex-boyfriend. Shiven tells Gia that he loves her and asks her to come back to him. She refuses, and tells him that she is marrying someone else. Shiven is devastated, and doesn't know what to do. Later, he accidentally runs Tehzeeb (who went missing after running away from Ashutosh) over, and when he takes her back to his house along with Ashutosh, he sees how much the couple love each other, and realises that he loves Gia too much to let her marry someone else. He decides to make amends with her.
The story moves to the world of superstars. A "superstar" who goes by the name of Kamini (Priyanka Chopra) has only one hitch - she is a superstar but only as an item girl rather than being a full blown heroine. She wants to be there at all costs but can't really avoid the media who are after her to pick up one scandal after another. But now she has decided to come up with an ultimate plan, a plan that would propel her to the position of a numero uno heroine. A dream role in Karan Johar's film. She devises a plot to change her image by announcing that she's into a serious relationship with a fictitious character Rahul. The arrival of a stranger claiming to be Rahul (Salman Khan) in her life may just about change things for her. Rahul demand 1 crore, and Kkamini reluctantly agrees as Kkamini doesn't want her lie to be caught, so she pretends to be in love with Rahul. After some times, she begins to fall in love with Rahul. Then Rahul proposes to her in front of the media, and she accepts. Rahul then says that he will pretend to die. Later on, Rahul reveals to Kkamini that he has loved her since before she was famous, because she use to sing at a hotel, and he fell in love with her. Rahul asks Kkamini to marry him, but at the cost of her career. She wants to agree, but at that moment, her secretary comes in and says that Karan Johar is announcing his next film. In a rush Kkamini says that she must be selected for it, and Rahul says that he will pretend to die. Kkamini is confused so she rushes back to the hotel, but when she reaches there, she finds that Rahul has already left, and she is surrounded by media asking her questions about Rahul's death. Kkamini begins to cry, and her secretary realises that she loves Rahul. The secretary suggests that they go looking for Rahul. She is still confused, and then she meets Vinay in a coffee shop at 2am. Kkamini tells Vinay about the lie. They discuss their problems, and Vinay tells her that she should stop Rahul from leaving. Kkamini then agrees and she and her secretary goes looking for him.
From superstars, the setting changes to ordinary men and women of which Ramdayal (Sohail Khan) and Phoolwati (Ishaa Koppikar) are a part of. A newly wed couple, they want to spend all their time in each other's arms, especially Ramdayal who has been waiting for such times forever. But then desires are not always meant to be fulfilled and what happens in the bargain are some funny moments that could even be termed tragic to an extent.
Will they be able to overcome the hurdles that they face?
[edit] Reviews and Critics
The music was generally approved of by Rediff.com' as "awesome", [1] however, due to the concept of the movie, comparisons were drawn to Richard Curtis' ensemble film Love Actually.[1]
The film, however, has garnered a tepid response from the critics. Film critic Taran Adarsh called "a disjointed script, abstract style of narrating the story and excessive length" as the film's main deficiencies[2]. Rediff.com's Sukanya Verma called it "an ode to mediocrity, not love or cinema".[3] However the English Audience appreciated the film to the full extent. Poonam Joshi of Channel 4 described the film as "innovative and utterly hilarious" and saying it "redifines the genre of romantic comedy." [4]. Though the film suffered from poor reviews it garnered a good response from audiences, earning approximately $1,000,009 US Dollars in the U.S.A. alone, grossing £349,000 in the U.K. and approximately 850,000 Australian Dollars in Australia. The film garnered a 3.5 Star rating on IndiaFM and a 4.5 Star rating on Channel 4. It's overall World gross in its opening weekend was $11,000,000 Dollars, causing Salaam-e-Ishq's distributors Eros International to pronounce the film a hit.
