It won the 1970 Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration, and Lyric-Writer Of The Best Film Song On National Integration for Kaifi Azmi.

The was a part history (a team of guerrillas is sent to destabilize Goa in advance of the Indian troops) and part plea for national unity. It portrays the heroic story of seven Indians who attempt to liberate Goa from the Portuguese colonial rule. [1]

A Muslim poet Anwar Ali (Amitabh Bachchan), and five other men all belonging from different religions, and from different parts of the India join their seventh comrade, Maria (Shehnaz), a native of Portuguese-occupied Goa, to raise nationalist sentiment in that state by hoisting Indian flags on Portuguese forts and buildings.

In the process they find unity and abandon their religious and regional differences.

The film begins with a dying Maria who summons her former comrades and ends with the comrades assembling before her and reiterating their faith in nationalism.

Amitabh Bachchan made his debut with this film. Bachchan played one of the Indians captured by the enemy nation as POW. He played the role of a Muslim poet, showing early promise for a very successful later career. Amitabh Bachchan won 1970 National Film Award as the "Best Newcomer" for his performance. [2][3]
