[edit] Rodney Copperbottom

Robots character
Rodney Copperbottom
Rodney Copperbottom in Robots, Robot City can be seen in the background.
Age: Eighteen in most of the movie.
Eyes: Blue
Skin: Blue and White
Voiced by: Ewan McGregor

Rodney Copperbottom is the main protagonist, and is voiced by Ewan McGregor.

Ever since he was a young 'bot', Rodney dreamed of becoming an inventor and meeting his childhood hero Bigweld. After being fired over one of his inventions, Rodney decides to leave Rivet Town to go to Robot City, and sell his idea to Bigweld. Unfortunately Bigweld has been replaced by Ratchet, a smooth-talking but sinister robot. After being evicted from the boardroom Rodney meets the Rusties, a group of "outmodes" (outdated 'bots with worn out or broken parts). The outmodes befriend Rodney after he is able to fix most of them.

Rodney and Fender eventually discover that Ratchet stopped the production of replacement parts, in order to force all robots to receive regular upgrades. Ratchet also forced Bigweld into hiding, to keep his plan a secret. Rodney and the other robots unite to defeat Ratchet, and the outmoded robots finally receive their much needed replacement parts.

Rodney's color is sky blue.

[edit] Fender

Fender is the co-star of the movie, and is voiced by Robin Williams.

Fender first appears when he takes some pictures of Rodney Copperbottom's first moments in Robot City. Then he tries to scam Rodney by saying that he must buy the photo for 50 bucks. He later meets Rodney again in Robot City and the two become friends. Fender invites Rodney back to his home and introduces him to his friends, the Rusties.

Fender has a "sister" named Piper, whose nerves he always seems to get on.

When Fender is taken to the Chop Shop he loses his legs. He puts on a replacement only to find out his new legs once belonged to a female robot. With no time to find another replacement he used the new legs to escape the Chop Shop.

Fender's color is red.

[edit] Cappy

Cappy is another main character and is voiced by Halle Berry.

Cappy is a young robot, living in and working in Robot City as one of Bigweld Industries' (only female) co-executives, which is presently run by the evil-twisted robot, Ratchet. Unlike Ratchet and his sycophants, she sympathizes with the 'outmodes' as their parts are cut off to make way for Ratchet's new plan. Upon meeting young Rodney, she quickly begins to develop feelings for him and tries to keep him and his friends out of trouble, especially from Ratchet.

Cappy's main color is black.

[edit] Bigweld

Bigweld is voiced by Mel Brooks.

Bigweld used to be considered "greatest robot of all time" ("besides Mr.Copperbottom" according to Rodney Copperbottom) and had owned a TV show where robots could come and send in ideas for inventions that would make robots' lives better. Rodney Copperbottom loved this show so much that he decided to make an invention of his own called the Wonderbot. But when Rodney gets old enough to travel all the way to Robot City just to show Bigweld Wonderbot, Ratchet is in Bigwelds' place, while Bigweld has become disillusioned and has allowed Ratchet to control Bigweld Industries. Bigweld is not what he used to be, and if one looks closely, one can see significant differences between Bigweld in person and Bigweld on his old TV show. Rodney stops Ratchet from putting Outmodes into the Chop Shop, and then Bigweld returns to his old self. He makes Rodney Copperbottom his right-hand man in Bigweld Industries and gives Mr. Copperbottom enough parts to make two of himself. He also gives Diesel a new voice box for him to use. At some point in the movie, Bigweld also mistakes Rodney for being Cappy's boyfriend, which makes sense as they are seen dancing with each other and hugging at the end of the movie.

Bigweld has two main catch phrases that we hear in the movie:

  • "See a need, fill a need."
  • "You can shine no matter what you're made of!"

Bigweld's colors are silver, black, and gold.

[edit] Wonderbot

Wonderbot is a sentient invention with a nervous disposition, but does not have a speaking part. Instead, he uses body language to communicate.

Wonderbot was designed by Rodney Copperbottom to help out with things such as cleaning dishes for Mr. Copperbottom. After a brief trial run at the diner that his father works at, his invention goes crazy after Mr. Copperbottom's boss comes in and scares him. After being fired from his job, Rodney decides to leave his home in Rivet Town to go to Robot City and sell his idea to Bigweld to make his father proud. However his dreams are halted when he is thrown out by the crazied replacement, Ratchet, and meets the Rusties, a group of "outmodes" (an outdated robot that is worn or has broken parts), living in the ghetto.

Wonderbot's color was white.

[edit] Ratchet

Phineas T. Ratchet is the main villain who takes over Bigweld's company and plans to turn robots into scrap metal. Ratchet is voiced by Greg Kinnear.

After reducing Bigweld to nothing but a retired figurehead, Ratchet rose to head Bigweld Industries. Using his new position, he and his conniving mother, Madame Gasket, hope to put in play their plans to take over Robot City. Ratchet propagandas the idea that "outmodes" are nothing but scrap metal and that they must have complete upgrades, not new parts. When Rodney tries to sell off his ideas, Ratchet rejects him as another lousy inventor. He wants Cappy for himself, despite the fact that she visibly (but silently) detests him. In the end, he ends up hanging from a hook in the Chop Shop, the same fate as his father.

Ratchet's color is silver, with a red "tie".

[edit] Mr. Copperbottom

Herb Copperbottom (voiced by Stanley Tucci) is Rodney Copperbottom's dad and Mrs.Copperbottom's husband.

Herb Copperbottom first appeared at the very beginning of the movie as he was shouting "Whoo-hoo!! I'm gonna be a dad! I'm gonna be a dad!" because that was the day Mr. & Mrs.Copperbottom were having a baby (Rodney). Mr. Copperbottom had always wanted to be a musician, although he ended up working at a diner to make his dad proud (because his dad worked at a diner). Mr. Copperbottom's boss' name is Mr. Gunk who disrespects him. In the end Herb removes his dishwashing machine and smashes it on Mr. Gunk's head. He is given two sets of spare parts by Mr. Bigweld, and his son gave him an instrument to help achieve his dream of becoming a musician.

Herb's color is a similar sky blue to Rodney's.

[edit] Piper

Piper Pinwheeler is Fender's "sister". She is voiced by Amanda Bynes.

She works with Fender's gang. Fender appears to get on her nerves a lot. She has a crush on Rodney and refers to Fender as her brother. She seems to be jealous of Cappy. In one scene within the film, she called Fender, her brother, her sister after he got his new feminine legs, but calls him an ugly sister in a jesting tone. In another scene, she attempts to aid Rodney in his rescue of Bigweld, but is held back by Fender, who told her to stay behind because they are "Headed for a big butt whoopin" and he wants to "Leave something behind". She arrives at the movie's final fight scene with the outmodes in tow, despite Fender's wishes.

Her color is yellow.

[edit] Aunt Fanny

Aunt Fanny is a robot and is voiced by Jennifer Coolidge.

She is a motherly figure to the Rusties, and takes care of them. Her name is based on her immense rear end (Rodney once asked why her name was Aunt Fanny, and Fender replied "Well, we couldn't call her Aunt Booty"). Aunt Fanny appears to have a crush on Bigweld, and Bigweld also seems to have a crush on her. In the UK, however, her name is changed to Aunt Fan because 'Fanny' is slang for female genitals. Aunt Fanny is known for her flatuence problem as shown in the movie, as a Street light outside her house chokes to death upon smelling her gas.

She is colored pink.

[edit] Tim

Tim in charge of the controls of the gate of Bigweld Industries, and is voiced by Paul Giamatti. He is sarcastic and mean (but bows under intimidation), unlike his persona presented in the Big Weld commercials. He closes the door multiple times on Rodney, a fact he uses to escape security robots later on.

Tim has the colors of black and gold.

[edit] Crank

Crank Casey (known to his friends as Crank) is a robot, and is voiced by Drew Carey.

Staying true to his name, he is constantly complaining about various problems. He'd much prefer the easy way out, which to him involves sitting around waiting for the worst to happen, and complaining when it does.

A pessimist, Crank is one of the many robots Rodney Copperbottom meets on his journey to Robot City. He lives with Aunt Fanny as well as Fender, Piper, Lug, and Diesel. He helps find voice/sound chips for Diesel. In the final battle he replaced his old wheels with monster truck wheels and obtained headlights.

His color is yellow-orange.

[edit] Lug

Lug is a large robot, and is voiced by Harland Williams.

His main problem with scavenging for parts comes in the fact that he can never find parts in his size. Later in the movie, he is converted into a professional wrestler robot with ninja characteristics in order to fight evil robots.

Lug is one of the many robots Rodney Copperbottom meets on his journey to Robot City. He takes care of Aunt Fanny as well as Fender, Piper, Crank, & Diesel. He helps find voice/sound chips for Diesel. He also looks for parts that can come in his size and he moans that he can never find parts in his size.

He is colored green.

[edit] Diesel

Diesel is a robot who needs voice/sound chips to speak or make noises from his mouth. His personality changes to suit the voicebox he is currently using.

He and his friends have often looked for voice boxes that he could use. A running gag throughout the movie involved him finding and trying out different voice boxes, then acting out a pop culture reference with each one (for example, when finding out about Rodney's talent, he puts in a box and says "The Force is strong in this one" in Darth Vader's voice). In the end Diesel gets a brand new voice box from Bigweld, and starts singing like James Brown. His weapons of choice in the final battle were two flail/gun hybrids. He also wore boots and a cowboy hat.

His color was blue.

[edit] Mrs. Copperbottom

Lydia Copperbottom is the mother of Rodney Copperbottom and wife of Mr. Copperbottom, and is voiced by Dianne Wiest. She is a housewife and is very kindhearted.

Her color is teal/aqua.

[edit] Mr. Gunk

Mr. Gunk is the boss of the diner that Mr. Copperbottom works at, and is voiced by Dan Hedaya. He is very strict and bossy.

In the end of the film Mr. Gunk gets a dishwasher smashed onto his head by Mr.Copperbottom.

He is a cash register with a clock for a nose, and he is colored forest green.

[edit] Loretta

Loretta Geargrinder is Fender's love interest, and is voiced by Natasha Lyonne.

Loretta is a good-looking, pink girl that Fender meets at the Bigweld Ball. After the party both Fender and Loretta asked if they could meet each other sometime. She is also the receptionist at Bigweld Industries.

[edit] Madame Gasket

The true mastermind behind Ratchet's plot to take over Robot City, and his own mother. Madame Gasket owns a chopshop for the out-modes collected by Ratchet underneath Robot City. She is behind all of Ratchet's plans, and it's implied that he would be nothing without her. She is destroyed when she falls into her own furnace.

She is incredibly ugly, so much so that Fender mistakes her for a man at first sight.

She is voiced by Jim Broadbent.

Her color is scarlet-orange.
