Roman Empire (disambiguation)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term "Roman Empire" can be used to denote any of a series of different entities, usually referring to one of the following:
- "The Roman Empire" usually describes the dominion of Ancient Rome, eventually encompassing the entire Mediterranean, regardless of the form of government.
- The term Roman Empire is often used to describe the Roman Republic, which was the Ancient Roman polity in the centuries preceding its reorganization under the leadership of Augustus. The Republic was an "empire" in the sense of extending its rule over many foreign provinces, although its form of government did not correspond to the modern conception of an empire. The term may also be used to refer to the entire period in ancient times in which there was a major power with its capital at Rome, whether republic or empire.
- The Roman Empire's continuation in the East as the Byzantine Empire. In certain specific contexts, usually referring to the time before the fall of the Western Roman Empire, it is also often referred to as the Eastern Roman Empire.
- The Holy Roman Empire (800–1806), later with the addition "of the German Nation". It developed out of the eastern part of the Frankish kingdom, encompassing Germany and Italy, and later developed into a political conglomeration of lands in Central Europe.
- "Roman's Empire" is a comedy show currently shown on BBC Two, starring Matthew Horne.
