Return to the Secret Garden, aka "Back to the Secret Garden," is a 2001 film (U, 100 min) and an update of Francis Hodgson Burnett's original story, The Secret Garden. Lady Mary Craven (formerly Lennox) (Cherie Lunghi) is now an adult and leaves Misselthwaite Manor for America. The manor is now an orphanage, which she leaves in the care of Martha Sowerby (Joan Plowright). Once in America, Mary sponsors Lizzie Buscana (Camilla Belle) to visit Misselthwaite and tells her of the magical secret garden. Beyond that, the plot is as one might expect, the garden works its magic on all who enter it. Notable cast members include George Baker, Gwyneth Powell (a change from Mrs McCluskey in Grange Hill!) and Danielle McCormack.
The message, photography and style of this film are similar to The Railway Children and attention is duly paid to period detail. Since partly funded by a German company, the locations are not the original Yorkshire, but in Germany and are otherwise unidentified.
