Ram Gopal Varma, born on April 7, 1962, is an Indian film director, writer and film producer from Andhra Pradesh. His most successful films include Shiva, Rangeela, Satya, Company and Sarkar. He is also credited for making Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag. The film was a remake of the Bollywood Classic Sholay (flames). The remake turned out to be both a critical and box office failure.

Ram Gopal Varma was born to Krishnam Raju and Suryamma. He dropped out of the V.R.Siddhartha Engineering College in Vijayawada from the civil engineering branch, before taking up a career initially as the owner of a video shop.

Ram Gopal Varma started his film career in the Hyderabad film industry as production assistant for the films Raogarillu and Collectorgari Abbai produced by S.S.Creations. His first movie wasShiva, a crime drama with a college backdrop. Afterwards, he directed Kshana Kshanam, starring Venkatesh and Sridevi, and afterwards Raatri, Antham and finally Govinda Govinda.
He started his own production company, Varma Corporation Limited, and proudced Telugu films with it, like Money, Money Money, Gulabi and Wife of Mr. Vara Prasad.
His first success in Bollywood started with the successful Rangeela, a romantic drama. Afterwards, he released Satya, a film based on the Mumbai underworld. His most successful movie is Company, again set against the backdrop of the Mumbai underworld, in which he cut out song and dance sequences commonplace in Bollywood films. His next film as a director was Sarkar and released in June 2005, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan. Amitabh Bachchan played the character of Sarkar who is a self righteous and powerful politician.
His most recent release, Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag was a critical and financial failure.

Ram Gopal Varma is a media shy person and dosen't give much interviews.He lives alone in Bomabay.Once in an interview when asked won't he ever marry or have children, he replied that he never felt the need to do it.

Ram Gopal Varma has won the Nandi award (Awards given by Government of Andhra Pradesh yearly) for Best Director forthly for 'Shiva', 'Kshana kshanam' and 'Prema Katha'.
He also has won Best Director (in Bollywood) four times for Satya, Jungle, Company and Bhoot.
