Rajkot (Gujarati: રાજકેાટ, Hindi: राजकोट, English: Rājkot, pronunciation ) is the 4th largest city in the state of Gujarat, India. Rajkot is the 28th urban agglomeration in India, with a population more than 1.43 million as on 2008. [5] [6] Rajkot is ranked 22nd in The world’s fastest growing cities and urban areas from 2006 to 2020. [7]

Rajkot is a city of Gujarat state in India and administrative headquarters of the Rajkot District, located on the banks of the River Aji and River Niāri. Rajkot was the capital of the then Saurashtra state from 15 April 1948 to 31 October 1956 before merging in bilingual Bombay State on 1 November 1956. Rajkot was merged into Gujarat State from bilingual Bombay state on May 1, 1960.

Rajkot has been under different rulers since it was founded. Rajkot have large history and has significant part in Indian independence movement.

Foundation and Origin of Name
Rajkot is founded by Thakur Saheb Vibhaji Ajoji Jadeja of Jadeja clan and Raju Sandhi in 1612 AD, middle of Saurashtra (region). Vibhaji Ajoji was grandson of Jam Sataji of Nawanagar, present day Jamnagar. Rajkot named in honour of its co-founder Raju Sandhi.

Nawab rule
Masum Khan conquered Rajkot in the year 1720 AD. He was a deputy Faujdar of Junagadh's Nawab. Masum khan changed name of Rajkot to Masumabad. He also built the fortress in 1722 AD, which was about 4 to 5 kilometers in perimeter and its walls were 8 feet wide. There were Eight Gates for access Masumabad, which were studded with iron spikes on its outer side for defense purposes. These were Kotharia Naka, Nava Naka, Raiya Naka, Bedi Naka, Bhichari Naka, Sardhar Naka and Pal no Darwajo. Further, there was a gate without spikes called Khadaki Naka near Nakalank Temple. Debris of fort wall can be seen in the bastion in Ramnath para area. Gates of Bedi Naka and Raiya Naka were modified during the colonial times. The chief Engineer of British Agency, Sir Robert Bell Booth, renovated Bedi gate and Raiya Naka gate and built the present three storied clock towers in 1892.

Jadeja rule
Masumabad was conquered by Jadeja clan and its name was restored to Rajkot. Bavajiraj Jadeja had built Darbargadh, first palace of this princely state. He was succeeded by his son Sir Lakhjiraj Jadeja. He was most prominent ruler amongst previous Jadeja ruler. He constructed Lalpari Lake and Randarda Lake. His son Dharmendrasingji Jadeja succeeded him, but he died during hunting of Lion in Sasan Gir, therefore his second son Pradumansign Jadeja tookover his monarchy. Rajkot was merged into Republic of India during his regime.

British rule
British East India Company founded saurashtra agency in Rajkot to moderate all princely state. Regional headquarter and residency of this agency was at Kothi Compound. British constructed many impressive colonial buildings and educational institutions, few are Connaught Hall and The Rajkumar College. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi spent the early years of his life when his father was a Diwan to the king of Rajkot. He did fasting to ask to form people's council and liberation of people of Rajkot at Rashtriya Sala in 1939.

Post independence
After independence rajkot became capital of State of Saurashtra headed by U. N. Dhebar as chief Minister. Rajkot was merged into Gujarat State from bilingual Bombay state on May 1, 1960.

Rajkot is located at 22.3° N 70.78° E [8]. It has an average elevation of 134 metres (439 feet).The city is located on the bank of Aji River which remains dry except the monsoon months of July to September. The city is spread in the area of 104.86 km². [9]

Rajkot has quite a pleasant climate. The climate does not exhibit a lot of extremities. The summer spans from March to June. The temperature at this time varies between 24°C and 42°C. The rainy season spans from July to September. The average amount of rainfall received by the place is 500 mm. The city has cooler nights much to the relief of hotter days. The average rainfall is 500mm. There are three seasons observed here in different months of year as winter (October to February), summer (March to June) and monsoon (July to September).

The city of Rajkot does not witnesses much extreme climatic conditions, which makes it easier for the visitors to travel to this place and stay here. The summertime stretches from the month of March to the month of June. During the months of summer, the temperature during the daytime in Rajkot can be as high as 42°C. The rainy season stretches from the month of July to the month of September. The winter time starts from the month of October and stretches till February.

One of the most important weather phenomena that are associated with the city of Rajkot is cyclone. The cyclones generally occur in the Arabian Sea during the months after the rainy season. The region experiences a lot of rainfall and high-speed winds during the time of the year after the monsoon season as well as the months of May and June. However, May and June experience lesser amount of rainfall and winds than the post-monsoon time. Thunderstorms are another important part of the Rajkot weather in the months of June and July. Fog is one of the major phenomena of Rajot climate during winter. During summer time, the temperature ranges between 24°C and 42°C. In the months of winter, Rajkot temperature varies between 10°C and 24°C.

The time of the year between the month of October and the month of March is commonly considered to be the best time to travel to Rajkot. The weather of Rajkot is the most pleasant at this time of the year. [10]

Rajkot is managed by many government bodies, including Seva Sadan (Rajkot district Collector Offices), Rajkot Municipal Corporation, Rajkot Urban Development Authority and Police Department of Gujarat and Rajkot City Traffic Police Department.

Rajkot had a total population of 10,03,015. Males are 5,25,898 and females are 5,25,898, in percent males are 52.43% and females are 47.57% of the total population in Rajkot (RMC) and it's suburbs including Manharpur, Madhapar, Anandpar, Munjka, Mota Mova, Vavdi, Bedi and Kotharia. Rajkot city has an average literacy rate of 80.6%, higher than the national average.

Rajkot with its unique geography, totally landlocked in the South and with an open beautiful sea to the North, has imbibed the flavors of both regions. The word Gujarati has originated from Gujjar, the people who invaded the North and West India.

The people here are predominantly vegetarians and are vehemently against any form of hunting. This could be the main reason for the survival of rich fauna in this city. The women in Rajkot are very fond of jewelry. Large chains, pendants and other heavy gold jewelry are a common sight during marriages and festivals. The Rajkot men love to flaunt thick gold chains and numerous rings on their fingers. The attire changes with the season and approaching festivals. The ladies normally wear the Gujarati flavour of the Sari and men can be seen in flowing Kurtas.

Rajkot city is best known as a place that mixes tradition with modernity. This perfect blend is evident in its architecture and cuisine. The 21st century has not left Rajkot India trailing behind. Rajkot is bland of multicultural. People have arrived from various part of the world. One can find many languages, like Gujarati, Hindi, English, Sindhi, Marathi and Tamil. All such languages widely spoken & understood.

Rajkotians follows some etiquette like in some places you must remove your shoes before entering. Government offices in Rajkot work from 10:30 am to 6:00 pm & are closed on Sunday, Private offices work from 9:30 am to 8:30 pm. Some shops are closed in afternoon from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Rajkotians are very famous for this etiquette.

Rajkot can be considered as safe city but one needs to still take precautionary actions. If you do get into trouble then call police on 100. Gujarat Government has initiated 108 Ambulance services for first-aid, emergency and casualty.

Garba, a dance form, is popular both with men and women and is performed during the Navratri festival. The dance starts before midnight and continues until dawn. Mata Ambe, who rides a Lion, has a special reverential status with any highly religious Gujarati.

The 'Janmastami Mela' organizes by RMC for five days at racecourse ground to celebrate Janmastami.

Yagnik Road Rajkot's main commercial centre, known for its branded stores for a wide array of goods form clothes to electronics to computer peripherals. Also the home to Rajkot's corporate offices.

Lakhajiraj Road Famously know for its specialized 'Chaniya Choli' boutiques.

Dhebar Road Nut 'n' Bolt centre of Rajkot city. Ball bearings, automobile parts and car accessories stores are also situated on this road.

Jubilee Market Named after the famous Jubilee Gardens, Jubilee Market is well known for its wholesale fresh vegetable and fruit bazaars.

Sadar Bazaar A seasonal wholesale & retail market where goods marketed vary according to the season, kites during Sankranti, colors during Holi, firecrackers during Diwali, etc.

Rajputpara Road Market for automobile parts and accessories.

Vora Wad Rajkot's Ayurveda & Herbal medicine hub. Also known for its textile markets that specialize in traditional garments.

Dharmendra Road Rajkot's main market with items ranging from vegetables to readymade garments to toys i.e. all major domestic items.

Soni Bazaar As the name suggests, Soni Bazaar is renowned for its jewellery showrooms, with patrons all over the world.

Kansara Bazaar Home to the members of the Kansara Caste, who trade in an assortment of metal items like ports, pans, vessels to other miscellaneous items made of steel, copper & brass.

Ghee Kanta Road Known for its pure ghee and milk based items (mawa). Also famous for its traditional gujarati sweets like 'Pasta' & 'Sweet Kaju' which are generally used in religious acitivities.

Gondal Road An extension of Dhebar Road with stores for nuts & bolts, automobile & car accessories.

The acute business sense of the people of Rajkot is their innate character. The Rajkot of yore would remind you of the glittering palaces and thatched roofs. Today’s Rajkot, you see swanky cars, large business houses, glittering multistoried hotels, booming economy jostling with rickshaws, tongas, struggling common man, slums and squalor. This booming business town presently poised at the crossroads is still an attraction for a lot of talent from all over the country.


The industrial revolution in India had already put Rajkot on the world map way back in the 60s, when Rajkot was one of the few cities of Gujarat dotted with the heavy engineering industries. Today this city contributes to the economy of the state with heavy and small scale industries under the able patronage of Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) and Gujarat State Financial Corporation (GSFC).


It is sometimes remarked that the economy of Rajkot is directly linked to the BSE Sensex. It is one of those places in India where share trading is done on tea and pan shops. Today the business acumen of the people of Gujarat is known world over, no wonder the economy would be booming around here.


The booming economy of Rajkot got another shot in the arm with 28 crore World Bank aid for development of infrastructure of the city. Many a renowned business houses made a beeline for grabbing the property market in the city, before it skyrockets. The plans are already in place to beautify and modernize the ancient city, including a Rock Garden, ala Chandigarh. Another 25 crore project to rebuild the Kaiser-e-Hind, the only major bridge linking to the city, is already nearing completion. All such infrastructure development will add to the economic wealth and promote the local business houses.

Rajkot is famous for its jewelery market, silk embroidery and watch parts. The city hosts several small scale manufacturing industries. Some of the industrial products for which Rajkot is known include:

In the near future, the government of Gujarat will allocate large land areas for the development of SEZs (Special Economic Zones) which will be parted in three different areas and will include industries such as Software, Auto-Mobiles, etc. As per recent market reviews, Rajkot is becoming Asia's biggest Auto-Mobile Zone.

Rajkot is connected to major Indian cities by air, railway and road.

Air Daily flights are operated by Jet Airways and Air Deccan via the Rajkot Airport.

Bus The State Transport Corporation runs regular buses to and from Rajkot to other cities of Gujarat. There are buses for Jamnangar, Junagadh, Porbandar, Veraval, and Ahemdabad. There are a number of private bus operators connecting this city with Mumbai, Bhuj, Bhavnagar, Una, Mt. Abu, and Udaipur.

Rail Rajkot is a main railway junction of Saurashtra, trains for the all the major cities of India is available from here.

Shri Nageshwar Parswanath Jain Temple : This is a temple of Shri Nageshwar Parswanath Bhagwan. It is situated on Rajkot-Jamnagar highway near Ghanteshwar. A Beautiful Panchtirth. A place to visit once in Rajkot.

Race Course  : This is a large ground/garden located in the heart of the city. It accommodates various places of interest like Baalbhavan, Children Traffic Park, Fun World etc. Race course also has various sports facilities like Olympic standard Indoor Stadium, International quality Cricket ground, Football, Hockey & Volleyball grounds, Gym and swimming pool etc. Because of all these attractions, Race Course is the most common place to be visited by the "Rajkotians". One very interesting fact about Race Course is that it provides an extremely large sitting arrangement of cement benches along its outer wall.

Aji Dam : This dam is built by Government of Gujarat for water supply to city area. The down stream side of the dam and surrounding area is developed and maintained by Rajkot Municipal Corporation. A beautiful step garden with amusement park for children, zoo, bird aviary, crocodile park have been provided for entertainment of the citizens of the city.

Swaminarayan Temple : This is a temple of Swaminarayan Sampradaya. It is situated on Bhupendra Road. Historically Lord Swaminarayan gave a copy of "shikshapatri", a code of conduct of his followers to Mr. Malcam (political agent of British time to this area). This temple is also well known for its philanthropic activity.

Rajkumar College Rajkot: The Rajkumar College (also known as RKC) in Rajkot is one of the oldest K-12 institutions in India today. RKC has a 26 acre (105,000 m²) campus located in the heart of Rajkot city. The college was founded for the education of the Princely order by the Princes and Chiefs of Kathiawad for the education of their sons and relations. In 1938, on the initiative of its founding members, the College became a Public School (private school in Western terms) - the first such college to do so. The college itself is also a founding member of the Indian Public Schools Conference.

Shri Ranchhoddas Ashram : This is the ashram of shri Ranchhoddas bapu. It is situated on Kuvadava Road. This charity trust is running hospital for blind people.

BAPS Swaminarayan Temple : This is a temple built in 1998-99 by Swaminarayan Sampradaya. It is situated on fast developing Kalavad Road near Mahila College. This temple is going to have one of the largest auditorium in the state having capacity of thousands for the so called "Ravi-Sabha" and "Yuvak-Sabha".

Ramakrishna Aashram : This temple was built on Dr. Yagnik road in 1934 on the land donated by Late Shri Dharmendrasinhji, then king of Morbi state. It is second most important place for followers of Swami Vivekananda after Kolkata.

Watson Museum : It was inaugurated in the year 1888 in Jubilee Garden of Rajkot city. It has excellent collection of archiological and ancient traditional items. This museum, along with a huge library, are located in Jubilee Gardens.

Ishwariya Temple : This is a Shiv temple on the outskirts of Rajkot. It is famous picnic spot because of the hilly terrain and a small pond. A small fair is organized here every year.

Mukti Dhama : This is an electric crematorium located in Ramnath para area. It has number of small temples, prayer halls, library and beautiful garden displaying historical events which attracts number of people.

Jubilee Garden: A big garden with paths to walk on, trees, and swings. It is known for a special chutney made from peanuts and a spicy mix made from rice flakes called "chevdo". There are also snacks like nut brittle called "chickee" of many different varieties.

Yagnik Road : Yagnik Road is one of the most busiest road in Rajkot; also famous for big showrooms and shops. It links, famous Galaxy theatre and Shashtri Maidan.

Rotary Midtown Dolls' Museum: India's only Dolls Museum with more than 1500 dolls from more than 95 countries.

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya: In short form known as JNV, this is a Central School with (CBSE)Board affiliation , located near Targhadi radio station on the Jamnagar Highway. It is a boarding school where stundents, both girls and boys are admitted from six standard and stay up to 12th standard, after they pass all India wide entrance exam.

Alfred High School :aka Mohandas K. Gandhi High school This is the school where Gandhi Bapu went for school. Alfred High School Originally called 'Rajkot English School' was established on 17th October 1853. By 1868 A.D. it became a full fledged high school and came to be known as the rajot High School in 1886. It was named Alfred High School in the late 1907. The present buildings of the Alfred High School were built for Kathiawar by HH the Nawab of Junagadh in memory of H.R.H. the Duke of Edinburgh. This School was opened in January 1875 by H.E. Sir Philip Wodehouse, KCB, Governor of Bombay. The architect of this imposing structure was Robert Bel Booth.

Lal Pari Lake and Randerda : A Picturesque picnic spot, 5 kms from Rajkot.

Masonic Hall: The Masonic Hall House houses the Free Mason's lodge. It was called 'Lodge Kathiawar'. The building of this lodge begun on 1st January 1906. It was inaugrated in September 1906. At that time, the Honorable Sir Lawrence Hugh Jenkins, was the District Grand Master of Bombay. Mr. H.S.Davies, was the architect of this building.

Jam Tower :A tower with a clock was donated by Jam Vibhaji, Ruler of Jamnagar in 1880 as a gift to the British Agency. And hence is known as Jam Tower.

Shri Balkrishna Haveli A Temple of Lord Krishna at Near Swaminarayana chowk or Harshit's House.

Rajkot has number of newspaper publications mainly distinct by Daily morning and evening news papers. News papers published in English language are The Times of India, Indian Express, Economic Times, Business Standard and news papers published in Gujarati language are Phulchhab, Jaihind, Jansatta, Sandesh, Gujarat Samachar, Divya Bhaskar, Sambhav. Rajkot also published evening news paper including Akila, Sanj Samachar, Aaj Kal those have very health estimated readers per copy rate.

A large number of magazines, periodicals and journals are regularly published and circulated across the city. The city has three FM stations at Big92.7FM (92.7FM), Radio Mirchi (98.3FM), Vivid Bharti (104.3FM) and Satellite radio WorldSpace with 33 channels. All India Radio Rajkot (AIR Rajkot / Akashvani Rajkot) broadcasts on 1071 kHz (AM) and 102.4 MHz.[12]

Prasar Bharti telecasts DD National (DD1), DD Gujarati (DD11) from Doordarshan Kendra, Rajkot. Rajkot Chamber of Cable operators (RCC) has launched a company, which provide cable connection to Rajkot City and its suburbs with 94 circulars. Currently RCC is multicasting around 90 channels.

BSNL Telephone Exchange provides PSTN, Mobile, WLL and Broadband services. Private companies like Reliance Infocomm, Tata Indicom, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone India also provides Mobile and Broadband services.

Rajkot has one sister city.[13] Leicester Rajkot Twinning Association is going to build Leicester House with collaboration of RMC in Rajkot.[14][15]
