Police Academy 2: Their First Assignment is the first sequel of six in the Police Academy series. This sequel was directed by Jerry Paris. The film was given a PG-13 rating for profanity.

Steve Guttenberg reprises his role as Mahoney, the class clown of police academy; veteran actor George Gaynes as Commandant Eric Lassard; former American football player Bubba Smith as the high-towering Hightower; Marion Ramsey as the Laverne Hooks; David Graf as gun-crazy Officer Eugene Tackleberry; and Michael Winslow as sound effects wizard Officer Larvell Jones, all return from the original.

In this sequel, the police academy grads have graduated and now are let loose into the city, trying to help Lassard's brother, Capt. Lassard, played by WKRP in Cincinnati alum, Howard Hesseman, protect the town from an obnoxious gang led by Zed (played by Bobcat Goldthwait). Art Metrano also joins the cast as Lt. Mauser, as does Julie Brown.

[edit] Plot

Carey Mahoney and his friends Larvell Jones, Eugene Tackleberry, Moses Hightower, Laverne Hooks, and Douglas Fackler have now graduated from the police academy, and are ready to start going after real criminals. Their assigned precinct, which has the city's highest crime rate, is under the command of Captain Pete Lassard, the younger brother of academy commandant Eric Lassard. Chief Henry Hurst has told Pete that if the precinct's crime rate is not lowered, then Pete will no longer be captain. A big step toward lowering the crime rate would be to stop a local gang of toughs and their leader, Zed. The assignment goes to Mahoney and his fellow graduates. Mauser, a lieutenant at the precinct, doesn't want to see them succeed, because Mauser wants to replace Pete as captain. That's why Mauser begins to roadblock any efforts against Zed. Not to be outmaneuvered, Mahoney and his friends plot an appropriate revenge on Mauser while they go after Zed

The film was the 11th highest grossing film in the US in 1985 with a total of $55,600,000 over 1,613 theaters. There was high competition in 1985 in US theatres from films such as Back to the Future, Rocky IV, Rambo: First Blood Part II and The Goonies. In the US rentals alone it grossed $27,200,000 after its release on VHS.

The film was also successful in Europe, it took in SEK 18,063,063 in Sweden alone which amounts to $2,693,005.

Although the film was a commercial success, it had its share of critics as had the first film in the series and the following five sequels.[citation needed]

[edit] Trivia

  • Though Tim Kazurinsky is called Sweetchuck in the movie, in the credits his character name is "Merchant"
  • Two of director Jerry Paris' children were cast in this movie. While his daughter Julie Paris was given a small role as the checkout girl Zed talks to, his son Andrew Paris played Bud Kirkland, the punchy brother-in-law of Eugene Tackleberry.
  • Although everyone (even in subsequent Police Academy movies), refers to Tim Kazurinsky's character as "Sweetchuck", his name is actually "Schweechuk". This is evidenced on the sign outside his store.
  • In the scene where Mahoney meets some of Zed's gang members while undercover, a Russian dirty word is written among the graffiti on a phone booth.
  • A blonde policewoman appears on the official movie poster, despite the fact that no such character exists in the movie. Her inclusion on the poster was made as an inside joke by the producers.
  • At the time this movie was in production, original cast member G.W. Bailey was filming Rustlers' Rhapsody (1985) with director Hugh Wilson. However, Bailey was able to attend one day of shooting for this movie, and can be seen briefly as one of the guests in the wedding scene. He is shown from behind, wearing civilian attire, and has his picture taken by the photographer who bumps into Michael Winslow.

[edit] Goofs

  • Revealing mistakes: When Mauser is thrown outside nude in public, his white underwear is briefly seen.
  • Continuity: When there is a fight at the Blue Oyster Bar and Hooks go to find the address, Proctor says the address is 621 Cowan Avenue. When Mahoney and Hightower get there, the number on the door says 655.
  • Continuity: Officer Jones' hat falls off his head twice when he jumps over the fence.
  • Revealing mistakes: Although a window breaking sound effect is heard when Sweetchuck jumps through the store window, there is no glass seen in the pane.
