That portion of a greater whole which is distinct from the packaging required to transport it. The payload is thus the part of an object which is intended to generate some form of gain - in the simplest case, payment. Military payloads rarely produce direct fiscal remuneration; the gain anticipated is typically a strategic advantage or tactical victory.
Payload may refer to:
- Cargo, goods or produce being delivered or transported
- Payload (air and space craft), the net carrying capacity of an aircraft or spacecraft (as distinct from throw weight)
- Warhead, a payload composed of explosive materials and a detonator delivered by a missile, rocket, or torpedo
- Payload (software), a computer program delivered by encapsulation, such as a virus carried in an electronic mail message
- Payload (communication and information technology), the part of a data stream representing the user information and user overhead.
Payload may also refer to:
- Payload (Transformers) - a fictional character.
