Orona atoll, also known as Hull Island[1], is one of the Phoenix Islands in the Republic of Kiribati. It is unknown when the island was first discovered.

Orona was named Hull in honor of Commodore Isaac Hull, U.S.N. by Commander Charles Wilkes of the USS Vincennes when he visited the island on August 26 1840 in the United States Exploring Expedition. It was one of the islands involved in the Phoenix Islands Settlement Scheme. Hull Island was claimed by the United States in the 1800s. The United States relinquished all claims to the island in the Treaty of Tarawa with Kiribati in 1979, ratified in 1983.
