Nicktoons are animated television programs airing on the children's television channel Nickelodeon and its many spin-offs.
On Sunday, August 11, 1991 at 10:00 am EST, the first Nicktoon was aired, Doug. This show was followed by Rugrats and then The Ren and Stimpy Show. This format was repeated every Sunday.
Prior to 1991, Nickelodeon aired mostly foreign-based animated series mainly coming from Canada, United Kingdom, France, Eastern Europe (mainly Russia & Poland), and Japan as well as American animated series that were produced by other companies.
Over the years, more Nicktoons were created and aired. Other Nicktoons were created for Nick Jr., Nickelodeon's late morning and early afternoon lineup for younger children.
Many of the earlier Nicktoons, as well as Nicktoons from Nickelodeon's international networks, can be seen on Nicktoons Network, a 24-hour digital cable/satellite network.

[edit] Nicktoons TV, the block on Nickelodeon
Nicktoons TV, is a name used in TV schedules for a half-hour block featuring two stories from two separate Nicktoon series; or, sometimes, one Nicktoon featuring two stories from two separate episodes. It also served as a "to be announced" for gaps in the Nickelodeon schedule that have yet to be filled as the schedules went public, especially weeks before air.
The Nicktoons TV name was first used on May 16, 1998, as a five-hour marathon of individual, 11-minute (before commercials) episodes of various Nicktoons. Nicktoons TV became a regular Saturday morning series on August 15, 1998 (starting with a 12-hour Nicktoons TV marathon, with the block settling into its regular 4-hour block the following week); that block lasted until the fall of 1999.
Even after Nicktoons Network debuted in 2002 with the "Nicktoons TV" name, Nickelodeon continued to use the "Nicktoons TV" name as a stop-gap on the main channel.
