It is the headquarters of the Muzaffarnagar district. According to the 2001 census it has a metropolitan population of 331,403. It is mainly an industrial town with sugar, steel and paper being the major products. It boasts one of the highest per capita income in the country and the highest in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The Jaggery (heated sugar cane juice) market in Muzaffarnagar is the largest in the world.I has 11 Sugarmills and is known for its high production of sugarcane. It has more than 70% of its population is engaged with agricultural work. It is worth noting that Muzaffarnagar is the only city in India which expences crores of ruppes on relegious works including Bala ji Yatra, ganpati Yatra , Jagannath yatra and Guru Ravidas Jayanti. During Bala ji yatra engagesthe whole city and organizes the huge road side free feast or refreshment camps for the whole city.

Most affluent people like Vaish-Aggarwal,Tyagi, Jat families (Business men and Landlords) are engaged in profession like factories, Cinema Halls, Real Estate, Branded Retail,Agricultural etc. It is pertinent to note that Muzaffarnagar spent 600 crore on shoes and dress in 2006 (As per report national news paper Dainik Jagran) which again is highest in India compared to non metro cities. Muzaffarnagar town Shamli paid highest LIC preimum in India while Muzaffarnagar pays maximun telephonic revenue as a rent in India. In Muzaffarnagar basically Court Road, New Mandi, Civil lines & Roorkee Road area is one of the best and prime commercial area in the district which has all the big corporate brands on it. The city is situated in the middle of the Delhi-Roorkee-Dehradun Highway.

The city is home to many cinemas, restaurants and institutions. The more famous cinemas include Meenakshi Cineplex, ChandraTalkies and others are Maya, Alankar, Brij, Novelty, Sarasvati. The restaurants of interest include Nandis, Mool Chands, Cheetal Grand and Mool Chand Resorts. There are good schools of in the city,Bhagwanti Saraswati Vidya mandir, Holy Angels' Convent School, S D Inter College, and S D Public School. These schools have many graduates working in top companies all around the world. The city has an Engineering college named S.D. College Of Engineering and Technology which is ranked among one of the top colleges of Uttar Pradesh and graduating around 200 Engineers every year who are working in various MNC's all around the world.

The city was once maligned by some heinous crimes in the past. But things improved thereafter and now the city is on the growth track and due to the proximity to NCR, it is also growing by leaps and bound. There has been a recent surge in health clubs and gyms around the city, with the population becoming more upwardly-mobile and fond of upcoming value for money Brands. Services Club near Prakash Chowk is one of the older health and sport establishments, providing a swimming pool, squash, tennis, badminton and basketball courts, pool and billards, and an auditorium for cultural events. The sports stadium on Meerut road is another such establishment.

The older parts of the city have a Mughal feel to them with 35% percent of the population being Muslim. There is a sizeable Sikh and small Christian population as well. Even though the majority remains Hindu, Muzaffarnagar is one of the most culturally balanced cities in the country. The statue of Lord Shiv in the heart of the city is a major attraction. There are many monuments in district. It was establish by the ruler Muzaffar Ali. So many monuments of Mughal period are spread in the villages and town in this district. It was the the birthplace of Sayyed brother, who was a famous king maker in history. Jansath Tehsil is about 22 km from district headquarters. In this town there are many Havellies of Sayyed. Sheesmahal, Killi Darwaja etc. are a few of them.


The historical towns of Meerut, site of the rebellion of 1857, and Hastinapur are close by. Nearby towns are New Delhi, Roorkee, Dehra Dun, Panipat and Mussoorie.

Swami Kalyan Devji Maharaj was a unique personality who had dedicated himself to the service of humanity and had been serving villagers for last one hundred years. During this period of service Swami Ji had established nearly 200 institutions of National importance. These include Gandhi Polytechnic, Ayurved Medical College, Agriculture Science Centre, Ayurved research Centre, Degree Colleges, Inter Colleges, Senior Secondary Schools, Navodaya School, Girls Schools, Junior High Schools, Primary Schools, Hospitals, Eye Hospitals, Sanskrit Pathshalas, Agriculture College, Ambedkar Hostel, Dharmshalas, Dumb deaf and blind school, Yoga Training Centre, Old Person Ashram, Old Cows protection Centre, Orphanage and several spiritual and religious centres.

Muzaffarnagar is located at 29.47° N 77.68° E[1]. It has an average elevation of 232 metres (761 feet).

It is roughly rectangular in shape, lying between north latitude 29º 11' 30" and 29º 45' 15" and east longitude 00 00 00. The greatest length of district from east to west is sixty-one miles, and its greatest breadth from north to south thirty-six miles. The average length and breadths are about fifty-three and thirty-one miles, respectively. The total area in 1901 amounted to 1,963,662 acres, or 1,662 square miles and in 2000 amounted to 4049 square km. The district is well connected by road and railway network. National Higway-58 passes through Muzaffarnagar city.

As of 2001 India census[2], Muzaffarnagar had a population of 316,452. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Muzaffarnagar has an average literacy rate of 78%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 70%, and female literacy is 60%. In Muzaffarnagar, 14% of the population is under 6 years of age.
