This is a comprehensive discography of Metallica, a Los Angeles, California based heavy metal band. As of December 2006 the band has released eight studio albums, two live albums, two EPs, and one cover album, bringing the total to thirteen official albums from the band.
Metallica was formed in 1981 by vocalist and rhythm guitarist James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich.[1] The position for lead guitar was held by Dave Mustaine,[2] and bass guitar was originally played by Ron McGovney.[3] McGovney left quickly and was replaced by Cliff Burton,[4] while Mustaine (who went on to form Megadeth) was fired for substance abuse and was replaced by Exodus founder and guitarist Kirk Hammet. Metallica was signed on to Megaforce Records just before releasing the band's first studio album, Kill 'Em All in 1983. The lineup of Hetfield, Ulrich, Burton, and Hammmet recorded three studio albums together before Burton was killed in a bus accident on tour. The band was deeply hurt by the incident, but found a replacement soon. After their second album, Ride the Lightning the band signed on to a new label Elektra Records. Flotsam and Jetsam bassist Jason Newsted became the new bassist Metallica, he recorded four studio albums, two live albums, one cover album, and one EP with the band before leaving due to his tension with the band, making him Metallica's longest standing bassist. Metallica recorded St. Anger without an official bassist, with the duties filled in by Hetfield and producer Bob Rock. Ozzy Osbourne and ex-Infectious Grooves bassist Robert Trujillo was offered one million dollars to join Metallica, and accepted. The band is currently recording their first album in five years with Trujillo as the full time bassist, and on a new label Warner Bros. Records. Metallica has sold over 90 million records worldwide,[5] with over 57 million records in the United States alone.[6][7] This makes the band the most successful thrash metal band of all time.[6]
