The series premiered in the fall of 1971 in 90-minute episodes as part of the wheel series NBC Mystery Movie, in rotation with Columbo and McCloud. [edit] Plot
McMillan and Wife centered around a fortyish San Francisco police commissioner, Stewart McMillan (Rock Hudson) and his attractive, bright, but slightly daffy twentyish wife Sally (Susan Saint James). Often, the storylines featured Mac and Sally attending fashionable parties and charity benefits before solving robberies and murders. John Schuck appeared as Sgt. Charles Enright and Nancy Walker was Mildred, the couple's maid, both characters serving as comic relief.
[edit] Popularity
Like the other shows in the Mystery Movie, McMillan & Wife was an immediate hit. It appeared regularly in the form of syndicated reruns on local and cable American television.

- The address for the couple was once given in the show as 250 Carson Street. Two different exterior shots were used for the same interior set. The primary one used was a town house located on Greenwich Street in San Francisco. The second exterior shot was a free standing house.
- Sally wore a long red football jersey nightshirt with the number 18 emblazoned on it.
- In 1977 the show was renamed McMillan. Because of a contract dispute between Saint James and the studio, Sally's character was killed off in an airplane crash, and Mildred left Mac's employment to run a diner. Mac got a new apartment and a new housekeeper, Agatha (Martha Raye), who was Mildred's sister. No mention was made of the McMillans' child.
