Wilson starred in the films Miracle on 34th Street, Matilda, and A Simple Wish. She won a Young Artist Award for A Simple Wish in "Best Performance in a Feature Film Leading Young Actress" and a Young Star Award for Matilda in "Best Performance by a Young Actress in a Comedy Film". Wilson also appeared in the hit film Mrs. Doubtfire with Robin Williams, Sally Field, Pierce Brosnan,Harvey Fierstein, Matthew Lawrence and Lisa Jakub. Wilson also made several appearances on the primetime soap opera Melrose Place, playing the role of Nikki Petrova. Before she was in films, she and her eldest brother, Danny, did commercials for Texaco, Marshalls, Bank of America, and Oscar Mayer.
Wilson's appearance in Thomas and the Magic Railroad is her last major film role to date. She now works as a stage actress. In August 2005, she starred as the lead character in a production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella performed at the Ector Theater in Odessa, Texas, before becoming a freshman at New York University that fall.
Mara is in discussions to film a story about a billionaire's disadvantaged daughter; this will be filmed in London 2008 alongside Sean Connery and Keira Knightley, who plays the actress's sister.
