Mamonovo

Mamonovo (Russian: Мамоново; Polish: Święta Siekierka or Świętomiejsce; Lithuanian: Šventpilis), prior to 1945 known by its German name Heiligenbeil, is a town in Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia, located at . Population: 7,393 (2002 Census); 7,816 (1989 Census).
Mamonovo is named after the Soviet Commander, Nikolai Vasilyevich Mamonov (Russian: Николай Васильевич Мамонов), born on 27 September 1919, killed in action near Pułtusk on 26 October 1944, who was posthumously given the title Hero of the Soviet Union (Russian: Герой Советского Союза) on 24 March 1945.
Under the Teutonic Order State of Prussia Heiligenstadt was built near a Prussian settlement and was later renamed Heiligenbeil. It came under the bishoric Warmia, then to the territory of Natangia. As part of the Kingdom of Prussia and Germany it was the province of East Prussia. In fierce fighting between January and March, 1945 the Heiligenbeil kessel fell to the Red Army and was soon integrated into the Kaliningrad Oblast.
