Leeuwarden (Frisian: Ljouwert) is a municipality in the province Friesland. Approximately 91.850 people live in the municipality, an area of 84,10 km² (32,5 sq mi) of which 4,36 km² (1,7 sp mi) is water.

Leeuwarden (Stadsfries: Liwwadden; Frisian: Ljouwert) is the capital city of both Friesland and the municipality Leeuwarden. The city has an estimated population of 86.400.

  • Leeuwarden, Battle Of (WW2 Battle),In April of 1945 The Royal Canadian Dragoons, then a scout regiment were ordered to recon the town and make sure the Germans were being humane with specific instructions not to engage the enemy. The Dragoons found that the populace were being treated inhumanely and decided to go insubordinate and engage the superior German force. The Dragoons were only equipped Otter Light Reconnaissance Cars and were very few. They attacked on April 15th, 1945 overcame the Germans and liberated the town by the next morning. Since then the flag of the Royal Canadian Dragoons flies over the town hall as a homage to the brave men who freed the people of Leeuwarden frome the yoke of Nazi tyrany.
