Leanne Anika Battersby (previously Tilsley) is a fictional character on the soap opera Coronation Street. She is played by Jane Danson.
Leanne and her family were introduced in 1997 as the new "common" family. Leanne was, at that time, a mischievous troublemaker, who very much resembled a 'second-hand Spice Girl'.
[edit] Storylines
[edit] Marriage to Nick Tilsley
Leanne began dating Nick Tilsley and the relationship went swimmingly for a time, as the pair fell deeply in love with one another. Nick's mother, Gail Platt, was initially displeased at their union and quickly made an enemy of Leanne, although she eventually warmed slightly to her daughter-in-law.
But, it wasn't long before the rot set in on Leanne's marriage to Nick. The beginning of the end came when Leanne became pregnant. Nick didn't want to be tied down at so young an age and demanded that she abort the unborn child. Leanne reluctantly agreed. Their relationship couldn't survive such trauma and they consequently divorced.
[edit] Drug addiction and exit
Much to her stepsister Toyah's horror, Leanne became addicted to cocaine. But, this led to many a terrifying showdown with evil drug-dealer Jez Quigley, most notably in the Rovers Return during the early hours of 2000. Leanne found herself deep in debt to psycho Jez and knowing that he was capable of extreme violence, she was forced to flee Weatherfield later that year to escape his clutches.
[edit] Battle against Nick and Maria
She returned to Coronation Street in 2004 and quickly put a spanner (i.e., wrench) in the works for ex-husband Nick and his latest girlfriend Maria Sutherland. Leanne bore a grudge against Maria for her treatment of her beloved former stepsister Toyah and their sparring culminated in a brawl in the Rovers. Eventually, Leanne's scheming paid off as Nick departed Weatherfield without Maria.
[edit] Relationship with Jamie Baldwin
Not long after her return, Leanne started a relationship with Jamie Baldwin, who adored her. Jamie's stepmother, Frankie Baldwin, however, hated Leanne and several ferocious slanging matches ensued between the warring women. Despite her feud with Frankie, all seemed to be going well for Leanne and Jamie and they became engaged. But, Leanne's wandering eye would spell trouble for the apparently star-crossed lovers.
[edit] Infidelity and exposure
She began a steamy affair with Jamie's dad, Danny Baldwin, which involved more than a few risky episodes. Eventually, their sordid liaisons were exposed due to some confusion with Leanne's mobile phone. Frankie was absolutely livid and threw Danny out onto the streets. But, she agreed to conceal the identity of Danny's mistress for Jamie's sake.
However, when Jamie's biological mum, alcoholic Carol Baldwin, discovered that Leanne was the woman with whom Danny had been conducting his affair, she told her heartbroken son the truth. Jamie proceeded to call off the engagement. Met with disapproval from all corners of Weatherfield, Leanne departed the street to sort her life out, although she returned in time for her father Les Battersby's 'wedding' to Cilla Brown.
[edit] Reunion with Danny
Leanne and Danny eventually accepted that their respective relationships were over and consequently decided to reunite, much to the shock of much of Weatherfield. Jamie and Frankie were disgusted, but Leanne continued her relationship with Danny.
[edit] Mike's demise
When Danny's father, Mike Baldwin, began to suffer from mental illness, Leanne and Danny were the ones who cared for him. However, their main priority was getting their hands on his estate. Scheming Leanne urged Danny to go through with his empire building and didn't treat Mike at all well herself. She showed little sympathy when Mike died in April 2006.
[edit] Discovery of Mike's real will
Shortly after Mike's death, Leanne discovered his final will which left his entire estate to youngest son Adam Barlow and disinherited Danny Baldwin. So that she would have a way of taking revenge if Danny Baldwin mistreated her, she clung onto Mike's real wishes herself. Little did she know it, but this decision would prove wise for Leanne.
[edit] Heartbreak and revenge
Despite becoming engaged to Leanne, Danny Baldwin truly loved former wife Frankie and ended his relationship with Leanne in a bid for reconciliation. Leanne was devastated, and took revenge on Danny Baldwin by blackmailing him with Mike's latest will. Danny Baldwin was reeling as he was forced to pay her off.
[edit] Departure
Having been thrown into utter turmoil by Danny's decision, she double-crossed her ex by hurrying over to Adam's residence and giving him Mike's second will, even after Danny gave her the cash which she demanded. Having totally wrecked Danny's life, Leanne then made her exit to Spain.
[edit] Prostitution crisis
Leanne returned in March 2007 with a big secret — that she was an escort. She had told the whole street, including her oldest friends and family, that she was working as a property developer, while her real occupation was that of a prostitute. Leanne's beloved former stepmother, Janice Battersby, was horrified to discover the truth and made her disapproval very clear. Janice was desperate to get Leanne to quit her escort work even to the point of hiding Leanne's escort mobile telephone and pawning her own jewellery to give the money to Leanne. Leanne bought the jewellery back from the pawnshop, returning the items to Janice, thanking her for her concern, but making clear that she had no intention of giving up the life.
[edit] Liam Connor
Liam Connor took an instant shine to Leanne and she eventually agreed to date him. But, Janice made Leanne realise that she had to choose between Liam and prostitution. Initially, Leanne chose escorting, but later decided that she should allow her heart to rule her head and gave it up for him.
[edit] Paul learns the truth
In the latter days of her career as a prostitute, Leanne found herself a new client — boyfriend Liam's conniving brother Paul Connor, who was shocked to discover that his sibling's love interest was an escort. However, armed with mutually destructive information about one another, they both agreed to keep quiet: Paul with Leanne's prostitute secret and Leanne with Paul's sordid extramarital flings.
Paul subsequently attempted to end Liam's romance with Leanne, but to no avail.
[edit] Business deal with Carla
She went into business with Paul's glamorous wife, Carla Connor. They decided to open a restaurant together. In order to gather up the cash to make the purchase, Leanne made a brief return to her work as a prostitute.
This business deal would ultimately lead to Leanne's exposure, as Carla came across one of her clients who told her the truth. Carla was shocked and set up a situation where Leanne was very nearly unmasked as a call girl to the rest of Weatherfield.
Now that Carla knew what Leanne really did for a living, she decided to abandon their business arrangement.
[edit] Car crash terror and Paul's death
When Carla ended her marriage to Paul after finding out about his sleazy visits to escorts, he blamed Leanne and attempted revenge. He lured her to a car park where he bundled her into the boot (i.e., trunk) of his car to drive to Liam and inform him of the truth. However, a horrific car crash took place during the journey. Leanne was hospitalised, but survived. Paul, on the other hand, did not pull through and died shortly after the accident, leaving the Connors devastated.
[edit] Relationship breakdown and public humiliation
As Paul lay on his deathbed in hospital, Carla startled Liam with the revelation of Leanne being a "working girl." He was stunned and decided that he wanted nothing more to do with Leanne, shouting the truth out in the middle of the street. This led to gossip Kelly Crabtree hearing Leanne's secret, whereupon she set about spreading the news to everyone, causing a massive catfight between Kelly and Leanne's stepmother, Janice.
With her romance in tatters and the whole street shocked by her antics, the future looked bleak for Leanne Battersby.
[edit] Valandros
Since Carla refused to have anything to do with Leanne or the restaurant they were planning on buying together, Leanne decided to go it alone.
Leanne thought her only way of getting the £10,000 to buy the restaurant was to go back to escorting. But, her stepmother Janice decided to get a loan from her boyfriend, Roger Stiles, so that Leanne could buy the restaurant without resorting once again to prostitution. Unfortunately, Leanne struggled with her new business especially after her staff walked out on her. She was in desperate need to pay Roger back for the loan, yet the business was not going well.
Leanne then met Paul Clayton who was engaged as cook at the restaurant. After Paul began work there, Leanne began to feel hope when business improved. Paul eventually invested money in the restaurant acquiring a share of the business. However, Leanne was initially unaware that the money was obtained by Paul fraudulently using Jack Duckworth's name on the loan papers. She later found out and at the moment is pragmatically ignoring the fraud and has paid back most of her loan to Roger.
