Kotex became well-known in 1921, when Kimberly-Clark placed some advertising in Good Housekeeping magazine. Although some people were offended by the ads, the success led to a push for more advertisements. Kimberly-Clark promoted Kotex in Good Housekeeping by using an intimate advice columnist, Mary Pauline Calender.
The astonishing success of advertisements for a supposedly taboo item was also done by Listerine and Fleishmann, who achieved similar success during, approximately, the same era.
