[edit] Plot
Archana (Jaya Bhaduri) is a teacher at a school. In flashbacks, we find that she comes from a wealthy family. She falls in love with a professor Sukesh (Vijay Anand), who is not rich. They marry, and Archana's mother creates trouble in the marriage by making Sukesh feel inferior, because he is not bringing home a big paycheck. Archana tries to please both her husband and mother. But her mother is unyielding, and her husband is hurt and angry and gives her the silent treatment. Tensions increase in the marriage, and they divorce. Archana moves back to her parents home and is very unhappy. That's when she realizes that she should have backed her husband more. The film jumps back to the present, and she and her husband meet again. They ask for each other's forgiveness and reconcile. One of the film's major themes was how people try to fit in the increasingly modern India.
