Kiyosu Castle
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kiyosu Castle (清洲城 Kiyosu-jō?) is a castle prominently renowned as the first base of operations for Oda Nobunaga during the latter half of the Sengoku period of Feudal Japan. It is located in the city of Kiyosu, Aichi Prefecture, Japan.
The Kiyosu Castle was built between the years of 1394 and 1427, first belonging to Shiba Yoshishige, the current head of the Shiba clan. Shiba Yoshimune, descendent of Yoshishige, later inherited control over this castle during the Sengoku period. He possessed complete jurisdiction over Owari Province and regularly received backing from the Kiyosu branch of Oda clan. Oda Nobunaga took possession of the castle during 1555. Kiyosu was to be taken by the controller of the alternate Oda clan of Owari Province (the Iwakura), Oda Nobutomo after putting Shiba Yoshimune to death by revealing Nobutomo's plan of assassinating Nobunaga. Use of Kiyosu Castle would continue until the Edo period of the 18th century. Tokugawa Yoshinobu, a descendant of the famous Tokugawa Ieyasu, was the last owner of the castle.
