Kevin James Dobson (born on March 18, 1943 in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York) is an American actor of Irish descent, known primarily for his roles in movies, soap operas and television.

The brown-haired Dobson is best known for his roles as Telly Savalas's young trusted partner, Det. Bobby Crocker, in the popular 1970s crime drama, Kojak, and for playing Michele Lee's second husband, charming attorney, M. Patrick "Mack" McKenzie, in the popular 1980s soap opera, Knots Landing (a role he played from 1982 until the show ended in 1993).

[edit] Biography

After working as a train conductor for the Long Island Railroad, Dobson went to New York and auditioned for the role of Det. Bobby Crocker, the punching bag and lovable partner to Telly Savalas on Kojak (1973-1978). On an Entertainment Tonight interview in 2002, it was mentioned that Dobson enjoyed working with Savalas, throughout the show's run, and even shared a close bond, on- and off- the set.

From 1981-1982, Dobson starred in his own prime time series on CBS, called Shannon, about a police officer and single father, but the series failed to win substantial ratings. The following season, he landed the role on Knots Landing, which made his career even more successful. During his hiatus on Knots, he was also reunited with longtime friend and actor, Telly Savalas, to star with him, on a Kojak movie, It's Always Something, in 1990. In addition, Dobson also appeared on the syndicated, FX: The Series, for one season, playing Detective Leo McCarthy in 1996-97, and on the hit daytime drama series, One Life to Live and The Bold and the Beautiful.

Dobson served twice as Chairman of the National Salute To Hospitalized Veterans, having been a soldier himself. He has been widely acclaimed by veterans organizations for his service to help hospitalized veterans, receiving the Silver Helmet Peace Award and the American Legion Award.
