KANU is a National Public Radio member radio station in Lawrence, Kansas, broadcasting at 91.5 mHz. Owned by the University of Kansas, it calls itself Kansas Public Radio. The station also operates two full-time satellites, KANH in Emporia (at 89.7 FM) and KANV in Oldsburg (at 91.3 FM, serving Manhattan and Junction City). The stations broadcast mostly classical music, NPR news, jazz and folk/bluegrass music.
Together, the three stations cover almost all of northeastern Kansas, as well as large portions of Missouri. KANU's powerful 100,000-watt signal provides Kansas City with a second NPR station (alongside KCUR) and also serves as the main NPR station for the state capital, Topeka.
[edit] History
KANU signed on for the first time on September 15, 1952. In 1961, it became the first noncommercial FM station to broadcast in stereo. It was a charter member of NPR, and was one of the 90 stations to carry the initial broadcast of All Things Considered in 1971.
