Dr. Jonathan Mark Kenoyer is an archaeologist and Professor of Anthropology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is an American who was born on May 28, 1952 in Shillong, India. He earned his Bachelor of Arts,Master's and Doctorate degrees at the University of California,Berkeley, finishing in 1983. One of his main areas of expertise is the archaeological study of the ancient civilizations of the Indus Valley. Considered one of the world's leading experts on the Ancient Indus Valley Civilization, Dr. Kenoyer is involved in the development of a new center for its study in Gujarat, India as part of the Global Heritage project.Indus Valley Civilization.Dr. Kenoyer is the author of several books as well as numerous articles and reviews in professional journals and texts. As the curator of several important exhibitions on the subject, he has made the Western public aware of the beauty and intricacy of the crafts of the Ancient Indus Civilization. In addition to being a member of the American Archaeological Association, he has served on the board of directors of the Council of American Overseas Research Centers since 2003. Known for his interest in ancient technologies, he has combined both experimental archaeology with traditional methods in his research on ceramics, beads and other craft specializations. As a fluent speaker of Urdu, Hindi and Bengali as well as other South Asian languages, Dr. Jonathan Mark Kenoyer's research has exhibited an authenticity and objectivity often missing in the field. Contemporary craft traditions are the legacy of ancient traditions and Dr. Kenoyer's innovative studies have shown the relationship between these craft traditions and the social stratification of ancient Indus society.
