[edit] Coaching career
[edit] National Football League
During his time in the National Football League, he was the Special Teams/Defensive Assistant for the Detroit Lions from 1974-1976, the Secondary Coach for the Atlanta Falcons from 1977-1978 and the Defensive Coordinator from 1979-1982, the Secondary coach of the Buffalo Bills in 1983, the defensive coordinator of the Houston Oilers (now known as the Tennessee Titans) from 1984-1985 and the head coach from 1986-1989, and the Atlanta Falcons from 1990-1993. He became infamous for trading future superstar quarterback Brett Favre to the Green Bay Packers in 1991. While still coaching in the NFL, Glanville was famous for often leaving tickets at will-call for the late Elvis Presley, wearing all-black to be easily recognized by his players, and driving replicas of vehicles driven by James Dean.[1] In 1989, Sam Wyche's Cincinnati Bengals trounced Jerry Glanville's Oilers 61-7 in retaliation for Glanville's encouraging his players to take cheap shots.[citation needed]
[edit] NCAA
Glanville was formerly the defensive coordinator for the University of Hawaii's football team, working under his former coordinator at Atlanta, June Jones for two seasons. Prior to his tenure at the University of Hawaii, Glanville was the Defensive Ends/Outside Linebackers Coach at Georgia Tech from 1968-1973 and the Defensive Coordinator at Western Kentucky University in 1967
On February 28, 2007, he accepted the head coaching position at Portland State University, his first college head coaching job. Glanville, who replaces Tim Walsh, will be PSU's 12th head coach in the history of the program.[2]
[edit] Obscure tie-ins
One of the more amusing football games to come out for the Sega Genesis is Jerry Glanville's PigSkin Footbrawl, a medieval theme football game famous for the catchphrase "Send in the troll!" What Glanville had to do with this otherwise obscure title is unknown, as besides the occasional black-and-white picture and Elvis references, the game has little to do with his career.
[edit] Hometown Hero
Jerry is the only person from Perrysburg, Ohio to either play or coach football at a professional level.
