Airing weekly on PBS though ITVS, the Emmy award-winning series Independent Lens introduces new documentaries and dramas made by independent filmmakers.
Past seasons of Independent Lens have been presented by hosts Edie Falco, Angela Bassett, Don Cheadle and Susan Sarandon. This season’s host is Terrence Howard.
Independent Lens programs come in every shape and size, including feature-length documentaries, hour-long dramas, four-minute comic shorts, half-hour experimental pieces and everything in between.
The show has been awarded four Emmy Awards. One Primetime Emmy in 2007 for A LION IN THE HOUSE, and two for Best Documentary; one in 2004 for the documentary Be Good, Smile Pretty and another in 2000 for Sing Faster: The Stagehands' Ring Cycle. In 2006, A Lion’s Trail won for Outstanding Cultural and Artistic Programming. Two Independent Lens films garnered Academy Award nominations for Best Documentary: Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room (2006) and The Weather Underground (2004.)
