From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
ISO 3166-2:AU is an ISO standard which defines geocodes: it is the subset of ISO 3166-2 which applies to Australia. It describes 6 States and 2 Territories. The first part is the ISO 3166-1 code AU for Australia, the second part of the code was two-digit-alphabetic. Now it varies.
[edit] Comparison with postal abbreviations
Australia also uses 4-digit numeric postcodes, such as Sydney NSW 2000.
Note these were different from the standard Australian postal abbreviations. Now ISO 3166-2:AU is in accordance with Australian Standard AS 4212-1994. Those changes were announced in ISO ISO 3166-2:2004-03-08 Newsletter I-6.
