The 2006 Festival ran from 28 April to 7 May and featured more than 100 films from around the world. The film festival was started in 1993 by the Canadian Independent Film Caucus, a national association of independent documentary filmmakers mainly comprised of film scholars from York University in Toronto. Much of the festival's success can also be credited to the logistical support rendered by scores of volunteers every year.
In addition to the Festival, Hot Docs also runs North America's essential documentary market The Toronto Documentary Forum (TDF).
Venues for the 2007 event include:
- The Al Green Theatre inside the Miles Nadal Jewish Community Centre
- The Bloor Cinema
- Innis Town Hall, part of the University of Toronto's Innis College
- The Isabel Bader Theatre, part of the University of Toronto's Victoria College
- The NFB Cinema
- The ROM Theatre
- The Royal Cinema
